Edge of a board

The edge of the board is the second biggest part of the board. If you lay the board on a face side, it will be the height or thickness of the board. If you are looking at a 2 x 10 x 8, it will be the side that measures 1.5" x 96". Likewise, if you are looking at a 1 x 4 x 8, it will be the side that measures .75" x 96".

Parallel cuts vs. Perpendicular cuts

When you are cutting boards on the miter saw you are cutting the length of the board. Most of the time you will be making straight 90-degree cuts. Sometimes though, you will cut an angle. If the plans call for 45-degree cuts, parallel L-S (long end to short end), the board will look like a Parallelogram and the length measurement will be the span from one long end to the short end. If the plans call for 45-degree cuts, perpendicular L-L (long end to long end), the board will look like a trapezoid, and the length measurement will be from the long end to the long end. For perpendicular angled cuts, the L-L measurement is the easiest one to measure. Therefore, you will rarely ever see an S-S measurement.
