A dado is a rectangular slot cut into a wooden plank where another piece fits in tightly. A dado joint is made when a dado on one piece is received by a similarly cut edge of another piece. The dado has 3 sides Viewed in cross-section. The joined pieces are then secured with fasteners, glue, and binding. Dado joints are seen on bookcase shelves, or wooden puzzle toys. You can use a router with a jig or a saw to cut the slots.

How to Make Dado Joints

Step 1: Mark two slightly apart perpendicular lines on your first wooden plank. Ensure the lines form a 90° angle. Use a combination square. This marks the position and width of the dado.

Step 2: Extend the combination square blades halfway into the plank’s depth. For example, if your planks depth is ¾ inch, place the square 3/8 inch deep. Place the blade of the square against the plank’s corner to mark the dado’s end. Put a mark on the dado’s edge using the square’s blade.

Step 3: Saw in four incisions (kerfs) in the dado using a miter saw or back saw. Ensure to stop cutting the kerfs at the end of the dado. Using a chisel, remove all the extra wood between the cuts. Check if the depth is uniform.

Step 4: Smoothen the bottom of the dado joint using a flat wooden filer. Clean the slot using a chisel. Make sure the thickness and design of the other piece is similar to the dado on your first piece.

Step 5: Join your pieces and clamp them together. Check to see if they fit well. Apply some glue, or drive in nails or screws to lock it.
