The Wreck Site

Mac eased himself back toward the cockpit and retrieved the regulator. He took a deep breath and started to slip through the opening he had made. He worked until he was free of the wreck and pulled the tank out behind him. There was no need to check his air or waste the time and energy to put his gear back on. With the boat directly above, Mac inflated the BC, held the shoulder straps, and allowed the vest to float him to the surface.

Pip was there to take the gear, and Mel reached over to grab the slate that was clutched in his hand. Mac climbed out of the water and went directly to the helm, where Mel’s laptop sat. There was only a small chance the plane was Cuban, and a match wouldn’t confirm there was treasure aboard, but it would make it worth the effort to look. If it wasn’t the lost plane, they had a bigger problem than the expenses they had incurred: Mac had no doubt Rudy would hurt Ned.

Standing behind Mel, Mac shielded his eyes from the sun, knowing his polarized sunglasses would make it harder to see the screen. Without his now-mandatory readers, it didn’t matter. The data was a blur.

“Here it is.” Mel pointed at the screen. “Last three numbers are 927—it’s a match.”

Mac had noticed the odd number when he wrote them down. It was the first indication the plane might be legit, but still had to fall into the range between 901 and 935.

Mac’s elation quickly turned to frustration. They were so close, but out of air. There were two choices and neither was appealing. Only one made sense. Running into Chub Cay to get the tanks filled was an option, but a bad one. They could be there in less than an hour, but with the shutdowns and stay-at-home orders, there was no guarantee that the dive shop at the marina would be open. Finding another would require a cab ride. The whole operation was too problematic to consider.

Freediving was an option, and Mac would have considered it if the preliminary work had been done and the loot was actually accessible. As of now, he didn’t even know if anything was there. He would have to do a good deal of work to penetrate the plane, and make sure it was safe, to even find it. Mac was glad for the head start they had gotten. Their planning had put them in a position to allow a few hours to expire without risking Ned’s life.

The logical thing to do would be to relax and try and get some sleep, but Mac wasn’t wired like that. “I’m going back down.”

Pip laughed. “I got a few cigars left. Happy to share if you want to make it even harder.”

Mel chimed in. “Bad idea, Mac. You need to rest. There’s nothing to be accomplished by looking at something you already know is there. And forget about penetrating the fuselage without a tank.
