Chapter Ten
Jamie woke up late, with the sun already warming the room. She glanced at the clock, amazed that she hadnât woken when Ryan had come in. As she rolled over, she gasped when she saw the sheet still tucked up under the pillow on Ryanâs side.
She wasnât usually the type of person to catastrophize, but her heart started racing. She was sure Ryan wouldnât have driven after drinking all night, but riding home in a cab wasnât completely safe, either. It wouldnât be hard for a cab driver to nod off at four in the morning.
She hopped out of bed, and went into the bathroom, trying to come up with a plan to find Ryan while alarming the fewest number of people. As she opened the door, she gasped again. The tub was filled with six foot three inches of OâFlaherty, wet from the crown of her head down, and so sleepy-looking she might have nodded off any second.
âWhat in the hell are you doing in the tub?â
âDidnât get home until four thirty, and I was so dirty and sandy that I knew youâd kill me if I didnât shower. Then I thought I might be good-to-go if I soaked for a long time. That was a mistake. Iâm even more tired now.â
Jamie sat on the edge of the tub and caressed her cheek. âI was coming in here to pee, then gather up a search party.â
âReally?â She sat up a little, exposing her shoulders. âI thought youâd see my workboots by the door.â
âSeriously? You think I wake up from a sound sleep and search for your workboots?â
âWell, when you put it like that, it sounds silly. Sorry, babe.â
âItâs all right.â She went to grab a towel and held it out for her. âTime to get out now. Iâve got to pee.â
Ryan rolled her eyes, but didnât otherwise complain. She grasped the sides of the tub and pushed herself to her feet. âWhen youâre finished, will you braid my hair? I donât want to bother drying it.â
âSure.â Jamie took another towel and helped dry her off. âGive me thirty seconds of privacy.â
Ryan left the room, but stood just outside, continuing to talk. Jamie kind of hated that, but she had to be a little flexible, given that Ryan didnât complain about having to leave. âReady for breakfast?â
âBreakfast? Youâre not going to sleep at all?â
âDonât think so. I used to stay up all night pretty regularly. I think I can still manage it.â
âIâve only had five and a half hours, and I feel like Iâm carrying a sackful of rocks. But youâve always been more resilient than I am.â
âNot true,â Ryan said. âI just complain less.â

Ryan didnât have much appetite for breakfast, but she managed to get some oatmeal and tea down before she pushed the half-eaten bowl away. âReady?â she asked, standing up.
âFor?â Jamie asked, looking up at her.
âFor church. Donât you want to go?â
âI do want to go. Do you want to go?â
âI think so. Iâm not ready
