CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The conversation grew progressively less subtle as the evening went on, but by then it was obvious to both of them that it was quite intentional. Every comment about the food being delicious, spicy, or sizzling hot was an opportunity for a double-entendre, a coy smile, or an enticing glance. Emily was extremely good at this game, and Logan spent more time laughing and blushing than eating that night. She also watched her, as the warm light of the candles flickered and played over Emily’s charming features. Now, finally; in the welcoming warmth of her small home, and with just Logan for company, she was being totally herself. She was in turn funny, playful, even daring. Earnest and candid, too. If Logan had been intrigued by her and interested before, now she found herself completely under the spell of Emily’s deep charcoal gaze, the elegant timbre of her voice, and the sensual smile that it seemed she kept only for her.

“I love the way you look at me, Logan…”

The candles had burnt out, the food was gone, and Emily looked almost sad. There was a palpable shift in the atmosphere which triggered Logan’s protective instinct. She laid her fingers over the back of Emily’s hand.

“What’s the matter?” she murmured.

“I just don’t want the evening to end so soon...”

“Me neither,” Logan replied easily. “Let’s just keep it going then, shall we? Come on, Em.”

She led her to the couch in front of the fire, and wrapped a soft blanket over her shoulders.

“Are you warm enough?”

“Yes, thanks.”

Logan threw another big log in the fireplace that made the embers spark.

“People think it’s weird I don’t have a TV in the house, but this is my relaxation system,” she declared. “Is that okay for you too?”

“Yes, it’s very soothing,” Emily approved.

“Excellent.”

Logan had wondered if flickering flames might be an issue for her, but she was delighted to hear that it was not. She opened a side cabinet, took a few things out of it, and hurried back to the couch. Emily immediately snuggled up to her with a big smile.

“What have you got?”

Logan passed her the bottle.

“I’m not a big drinker,” she said. “A beer here and there is all I do. But on a night like this, when it’s cold outside and we’ve got the fire going… We should have a little treat, I think.”

Emily turned the bottle over in her hands.

“Glenturret Whisky,” she read. “Looks like quality.”

“Hand mashed in Scotland since 1775,” Logan nodded.

“I don’t drink very much either, but this sounds perfect.”

“Yep. Perfect for a special occasion.”

“Is it?”

Logan smiled as she poured about two fingers of the dark amber liquid in a glass and passed it to her.

“Well… You’re here, right?”

“And you are so delightful.”

“Nah,” Logan joked. “That was the food you prepared for us tonight, Emily, not me. Cheers.”

Emily took a healthy sip, swallowed, coughed, as expected, and laughed.

“Ooh… Strong, but… I could get used to this,” she grinned.

Logan set their glasses on the table and kept her eyes on her, smiling softly all the while.
