Chapter 20
This time, Leila seems to know exactly what she wants for breakfast. As though she has given it some serious thought beforehand.
After Rian has gone into the kitchen and Harry has made himself scarce, she looks at me intently. âIâm not sure I could live like this.â
âLike what?â I know what sheâs getting at. I had to get used to it myself.
âAlways having people around. Take last night. Surely Harry is no fool and he knew very well what was going on.â
âIt didnât stop you from announcing your orgasm.â I canât help myself. The memory makes something mellow bloom in my belly.
âI wasnât thinking about Harry at that exact time.â
âI know itâs weird at first. But you get used to it. And trust me, once youâre used to it, youâre used to it.â
âYou mean that you get accustomed to never having to do anything for yourself again?â
I shrug. âIâve lived like this for two thirds of my life. I know itâs indulgent and I know it has made me terribly complacent when it comes to household tasks.â Itâs been a while since Iâve thought of doing a chore. âAnd administrative ones,â I add.
âAnd youâve never considered the value of those tasks?â
âWhat do you mean?â
Leila drinks from her coffee, then says, âOur lives are made up of what we do every day. For most of us, that includes at least a minimum of mundane tasks like grocery shopping or doing the dishes. Or making our own coffee, for that matter. For me, itâs like a morning ritual that I couldnât live without.â
âIâm willing to bet a lot of money that you could.â I throw in a smile.
Leila just shakes her head. âA lot of life is made up of in-between moments like that, when we do a routine task and allow our mind to wander.â
âI admit Iâm spoiled when it comes to these things. I never have to think about what Iâm going to eat or whether I called the plumber. But I like it that way.â As if on cue, Rian brings out our breakfast. Smoked salmon, avocado, and poached eggs for Leila. Pancakes and fresh fruit for me.
âOh, Iâm sure you like it, but⦠I donât know.â Leila seems to have lost her train of thought. She looks at her breakfast in the same way she looked at me last night. She must be starving. I know I am. Without saying anything else, she digs in. All I hear from her side of the table for the next five minutes are a few âhmmmsâ and âaaaahs.â
I watch her eat and even that she seems to do in a sensual way. Itâs also really nice to have someone around to have breakfast with. Especially someone as lovely as Leila. I wish she could stay all day. We didnât have an interview session planned for today, but, of course, so much has changed between us since those plans were made. Maybe everything is an interview session now.
âWhat are you doing today?â I ask.
