En Plein Air

B ree and I pranced out of the art studio giggling like two schoolgirls. I stopped to fetch my black pumps from my car, then we walked arm-in-arm down the sidewalk of the local street. A few oncoming cars passed by without any sign of recognition, then one of the drivers on my side of the street stepped on his brakes and craned his neck into his rearview mirror as he passed by. We stopped at an intersection waiting for the light to change, and someone on the opposite side honked his horn when the lead car paused unusually long at the green light. When we stepped onto the crosswalk, an older woman approaching from the other side smiled at us, then her eyes opened wide when she realized that I was naked.

"This is crazy," Bree said, looking at the stunned look on the faces of passing motorists.

"It's not so bad," I shrugged, turning my head to assess the oncoming traffic. "So far I've only noticed a couple of people recognizing me. This road is too quiet to do a fair test. Let's turn down this busier street and see how many heads turn. It’s much more liberating than I imagined walking outside without any clothes."

"It'll only seem liberating until a cop pulls over and throws you inside his paddy wagon."

"You only live once," I said, hooking my other arm through Bree's and pulling her across the adjacent crosswalk. "Let's live a little dangerously!"

As we began to walk along the side of the busy boulevard, most of the motorists passed by without incident, but after a short time, more and more drivers slowed down and honked their horns when they realized what was going on. By the time we approached the next intersection, men were cat-calling at us through their open windows and weaving dangerously across the road. When we got to the light, I heard the sudden screech of tires and the sound of crunching metal behind me. Bree and I looked over our shoulders, and when we realized it was only a minor fender-bender, we scampered across the intersection to the other side.

"I told you we were going to cause a traffic jam," she said. "Haven't we had enough fun already? Let's get out of here before someone gets seriously hurt."

I glanced around me, noticing the accumulation of pedestrians staring at us from the other side of the intersection.

"Okay, but where can we go? It's at least a twenty-minute walk back to our car."

Bree heard the sound of a passing overhead train and looked up.

"Let's take the El to the next stop. It'll bring us closer to the studio, and at least get us off the street."

"And be packed in a sardine can with a bunch of leering passengers?" I said, beginning to feel increasingly self-conscious from so many prying eyes upon me.

"It shouldn't be too busy at this time of the day," Bree said. "We'll can find a spot in the corner and I'll stand next to you to provide cover.
