Harry took pills from two bottles after turning the bed down for Desi. “Thanks for calling Desi today and keeping her in the loop.”

“No problem,” Serena replied, “but who’s the cute redhead?”

“Don’t play her unless you have more than a night in mind.” She closed her fist around the pills, keeping her voice light for Butch’s sake.

“Babe, you left me, remember?” Serena winked at her and smiled sweetly. “Besides, it’s a simple question.”

“Don’t give me that smile and try to make me feel guilty. You’ve dated plenty since me, and the redhead is Desi’s sister, Rachel. They’ve both been through hell, so don’t do anything to add to that.”

“Ooh, it’s good to see you this overprotective. It’s refreshing, and it really was a simple question. I’m seeing someone, but she is cute.”

“If you don’t want me to teach Butch to pee in the yard, behave yourself.”

Serena shivered from either the mental image or from Harry whispering in her ear, but it ended in a slap to Harry’s stomach. “Ew, tell me you don’t do that.”

“Only when the call of nature moves me,” she said, laughing.

“You’re disgusting, and I get the message. Stay away from the redhead.” Serena followed her out and carried Butch down the stairs.

Harry handed over the medicine and smiled at Desi. “You’re right, only two more to go.”

Desi nodded as she swallowed and seemed happy to take her hand when she sat back down. “If only this part would be done in two days.” Desi pointed down to her leg.

“Don’t rush it, sweetie,” Tony said, beating Harry to it. “Your doctor knows nothing about fashion, style, or decorating, but bones she knows. Believe me, you’ll be okay with me pushing you around until you get your stamina back. Then we can shop for days.”

“God help us,” Kenneth said, making Harry laugh. “If he gets any more stamina, I’ll have to get another job at Starbucks to pay for everything he wants.”

“Kenneth Jerome Reynolds, I know you’re not complaining about my stamina. If you are, you can work on yours while you park your ass on the couch.”

“Your middle name is Jerome?” Harry asked Kenneth.

“He changes it every time he feels the need to add a name to make the threat more credible.”

Everyone laughed, and Harry followed Mona into the kitchen to help get the coffee and dessert Mona had made. They continued to joke until Butch fell asleep on Rachel’s lap, and Serena announced it was time for her to get him to bed. Rachel helped her by carrying the little boy out, and Tony and Kenneth helped Mona finish up in the kitchen while she carried Desi back upstairs.

“Damn,” she said, looking at the clock next to the bed. “I’m so glad I don’t have an early morning tomorrow.”

“Harry, go on and grab a shower if you want, and I’ll help Desi get ready for bed,” Mona said as she came in with Desi’s nightgown.

“I’ll help you.” Rachel sat next to Desi and kissed the top of her head.
