FAUN GIRLS

A lot of people would be too frightened to spend time down here at docks in broad daylight, let alone in the dead of night, but it honestly doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

First of all, the crime issues in this part of town are vastly inflated. In fact, in the whole two years that I’ve worked here in the shipping yard, I’ve never seen anything more sinister than a common graffiti artist while making my rounds.

Of course, there is something to be said for the general creepy vibe of this place, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What some might call dark and scary, I like to think of as calm and peaceful, a place for me to actually get some work done for a change.

I’m currently a student at the local college and my course load is enormous. When it comes to balancing education with a social life, I need all the help that I can get, and a few hours every night sitting in my guard’s booth is just the ticket.

Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without this job.

Sure, the hours are weird, but without them I’d be missing assignments left and right. My only distraction at the docks is the fact that once every half hour I’m required to grab my flashlight and leave the booth, walking through the isles of shipping containers as I search for something amiss. It almost never is.

I typically bring a bat, just in case, but mostly that’s just so I can hit some rocks into the water when I reach the beach, before turning around and heading back to the booth for another round of intense studying.

“Long shift tonight?” my friend Mary asks as she packs up her bag and prepares to head home.

“Just the usual,” I tell her, “Midnight to three.”

Mary shakes her head. “I don’t know how you do it, Sasha, that’s so late.”

“I sleep in,” I inform her.

Mary nods and then hoists her backpack up onto her shoulder. “You hear about the north end? Apparently, we’re not supposed to patrol there tonight.”

I nod, focused on the paper that’s on the desk in front of me until suddenly her words fully register. “Wait, what?” I ask, looking up at Mary.

“That’s what Grant said,” my friend informs me, passing along the news from our boss, “We’re not supposed to patrol in the north end tonight, I guess there is some kind of dangerous shipment from Greece, chemicals or something, I don’t know.”

“So what if someone breaks in?” I question. “I mean, shouldn’t we be guarding that section even more than usual?”

My friend shrugs. “I don’t know, I’m just telling you what Grant told me,” she says, starting to turn and leave, then stopping herself abruptly. “Honestly, it seems kind of shady. The cargo over there isn’t even listed on the books right now, all we have is where it came from and where it’s headed.”

“Where’s it headed?” I ask.

Mary racks her brain for a moment, and then snaps her fingers when she remembers.
