CHAPTER TEN

Ava

Three days. Three days since Laken came to my place and I unintentionally hurt her. I never wanted her to see me with another woman, regardless of the fact that I’ve not done anything wrong. I never wanted her to rush away and leave with a scenario in her head. Tyler is a no strings arrangement and she always has been. We don’t have anything between us. At least, nothing worth exploring.

I get it, though. I understand that Laken probably hates me and I wouldn’t answer my calls either. I wouldn’t respond to the messages I’ve sent. If I knew where she was, I’d be at her door and begging for five minutes with her. I’d be there, on my knees.

I didn’t think she would ever return. I didn’t think she would ever show up and tell me that she wanted something with me, but she did. She did at completely the wrong time. Isn’t that how it always works, though? The most inappropriate moment. A time when you don’t have the chance to explain yourself or try to fix something.

The story of my life, I know. If Laken would just answer my calls, I could fix all of this. Tyler and I aren’t in a relationship and we never will be. Laken is who I want. That gorgeous smile. How she kisses me. God, I’d give anything for a kiss from her today.

I have to leave for a business trip tomorrow evening, and I need to fix this before I leave. I’ve stopped at the coffee shop every day since Laken came to my place. I waited. I drank an unnecessary amount of coffee. Nothing. Nothing whatsoever from the woman who has been on my mind every moment of the day. More so today than any other.

Glancing at the clock, it’s seven minutes to one and I’m planning to leave the moment those hands hit the hour. My cell in my hand, I bring up Laken’s contact information and begin a new message.

I have to leave town tomorrow. Please, can I see you before I do? Ava x

I know I’m wasting my time, but I don’t know what else to do. I don’t know what to say to her and I don’t know what could possibly make this any better. I told her I would wait for her and that is what I’ve been doing. For six weeks. Six long weeks of hoping she shows up. Six weeks of memorizing the kiss we shared before she walked out and told me not to wait. That she was a mess. It still hurts when I think about it now.

The clock finally hitting one in the afternoon, I power down my computer and stand, taking my purse from beside my desk as I do.

Come on, Laken. Give me something. Anything.

Heading straight for the door, I shut off the lights in my office and breathe a sigh of relief when I glance back at the paperwork sitting on my desk. I
