Another Death from Abortion

We take the following from the “Jerseyman,” published at Morristown, N.J. It will be seen that the victim confessed the joint offence to have been committed by herself and Madame Costello, one of the female abortionists of this city, Coroner’s Inquest—An inquest was held at Denville, in Rockaway township, on Saturday the 14th inst., before Moses Beam, Esq., on the body of Elizabeth Peer, who died the day preceding. The cause of her death was fully understood, but the object of calling the inquest, we learn, was to endeavor to ferret out the inhuman female in the city of New York who committed this double murder. In this they were foiled, but it was understood pretty evidently that the notorious Madame Costello was the operator. Whether it was for the purpose of boasting of the immense business she is now doing at her infamous profession, or to inspire courage in her unfortunate patient, is not known, but this fiend in human shape informed the girl that she had already on that day operated on four from Morris county, and three from Elizabethtown! Should this be the fact, the police of New York cannot be too watchful over these wholesale murderers and panderers of vice.

We omit the testimony given before the jury, with the exception of the attending physician. The jury rendered a verdict that the deceased came to her death by an abortion, produced by some person to them unknown, in the city of N. York. A publication has gone forth which was evidently intended to create unpleasant feelings in the vicinity, but it only proved another abortion; neither did the examination cost the county one half the sum there represented “for effect.” The following is the testimony of the physician:

Dr. R. V. W. Fairchild sworn—In the month of July, deceased first visited witness and requested him to produce an abortion. Witness refused. She came again about a month afterwards on the same errand. Witness fully stated to her the dangers and impropriety of such an operation. She told him that she had been advised to such a course, and she was determined on it—that she would rather die than suffer the disgrace.

On the 6th or 7th of October, witness was called to her, and found a fœtus of five months in the bed, which he took home. Three days utter, he was again called to see her. Found her bowels uncommonly swollen—pulse small, and 160 to the minute—bilious vomiting, with cold sweat and diarrhea—told her her case was child-bed fever, and that he had no hope. She then stated she had gone to New York to one of those famous female physician houses, and that the membranes were ruptured by an instrument.—After being satisfied that her case was hopeless, she prayed for forgiveness and died at the house of her mother.
