The name Martha is found in texts and on ossuaries (bone boxes) from around the time of Jesus. It actually means âMistressâ, or âLadyâ, in Aramaic. This makes it look like the equivalent to Mar, âMasterâ or âLordâ, which was a way of addressing Jesus. His Aramaic-speaking disciples prayed for his presence by saying âMarana thaâ, âOur Lord, comeâ (1 Cor. 16:22). However, Martha does seem to be just a name, not necessarily a title. Calling a girl âLadyâ indicated perhaps a special value given to a daughter, maybe the eldest of a family.
