Chapter 5
Ridge, Mahk, and Chase trudged through the large door of the Holiday Pack house. This was his home, but it was also a place for pack members to congregate and spend time together. It was a place for the Elders to meet and discuss decisions that needed to be made and issues that needed to be solved for the pack. Those Elders stood staring at the three of them while Chase walked to the large leather sofa and placed the unresponsive body of Ridge’s uncle on the cushions.
Ridge sighed. It had only been a few hours since he had left the warm arms of his mate, but it felt like days. His heart ached and his wolf side fought to race to her. Instead he forced himself to come here and deal with the pack — with the Elders — to get them to help his uncle and to send protection to the cabin. After Mahk’s reaction, Ridge wasn’t sure how the pack would react to his bringing Malachi back into the fold. The trek to the pack house had given him time to think and he realized that for many it would be hard to accept. He knew it was the right thing to do. He would simply explain that new evidence had arisen and that his uncle had fought to protect him, therefore, it was only right to reinstate him to the pack. Whether his uncle stayed or not would be his choice once Ridge got the Elders to help heal him of the silver sickness and gunshot.
“Who is this?” Elder Zachariah asked — the Elders were not positioned in order to see the man that Chase had carried in.
Chase and Mahk both looked at Ridge, allowing him to be the one to speak. Ridge cleared his throat as he braced himself for the Elders’ reaction as he acknowledged the presence of someone who had been exiled.
“My uncle, Malachi.”
“What?” All three of the Elders in the room exploded at once as they rushed to look at the man on the sofa.
For the first time as Alpha, Ridge felt weary and stretched thin. The connection between him and Jaz was pulled tight over the miles between the cabin where she was and the pack house where he was. He finally understood so many things about the pack members that were mated… about his parents.
“I’ll explain all as soon as—”
“Now.” Elder Seamas interrupted.
Chase rushed to Ridge’s side, “You may be the Elders of our pack, but Ridge is Alpha and you will show him respect.” He glared at the other men in the room.
“Alpha, if I may, I’d like to send a few of the Protectors to watch the cabin.” Mahk stepped to his other side and dropped his gaze in respect.
“Yes, Mahk, please have them leave immediately.” Ridge was relieved that Mahk was taking care of Jaz and her friends as well as interrupting the scene Chase was making on his behalf.
When it came to Ridge, there was nothing Chase wouldn’t do for his Alpha or his friend.
