The morning air was thick with the smell of rain. Kumori shouldered his bag and took one last look at the disheveled room, making sure he hadn’t forgotten anything. He stepped into the hallway, closing the door behind him before heading downstairs and returning the key to the innkeeper and pressing outside.

Jayne was busy grooming her horse as Kumori crossed the muddy road to the stables across the street, thatched roof still dripping with rainwater.

“Didn’t think I’d catch you,” Kumori said, tossing his bag over his horse and tying it to the back of his saddle.

“You’re a heavy sleeper,” Jayne replied. “Tried to wake you up in the middle of the night.”

“Why?” Kumori replied.

“You kept shouting in your sleep when the storm rolled in.”

Kumori flushed red, turning away. “Shit. I’m sorry.”

“Thunder freak you out or something?”

“I don’t know,” Kumori said. “Hope I didn’t keep you awake.”

“You’re fine,” Jayne said before mounting her horse. “I’d say see you around, but . . . ”

Kumori nodded. “Take care.”

“You too.”

With that, Jayne turned her horse around and took off the direction Kumori had come. Kumori watched her leave, fighting the hopeless urge to ride after her. She was a stranger, after all.

Nevertheless, Kumori only found himself all the lonelier as she rode off into the gloomy morning.

He sighed, mounted his own horse, and started up the road.

Shadow emerged from behind the stable, dry as a bone, and trotted up beside Kumori’s horse merrily.

Kumori smiled at the sight of him. “Eventful night?”

Shadow grumbled, licking his snout.

“Heh. Me too, bud.”
