Twenty

Doors

Prometheus and I made the long trek back to Ulm, while Ajax stayed behind at the bunker to clean up from our kills. We arrived in town, only to find another, much smaller train sitting outside town. Pulled by a small and nondescript steam engine, the train was only three cars long. They’d been up-armored, too, with heavy metal plating reinforcing the car doors and access panels.

We gawked and almost moved right by until a familiar face appeared in the rear car’s open door. Hans Gruber waved us over, his blue eyes twinkling in the sunlight.

“Greetings, Hallo Freunde,” the Protectorate captain said.

Prometheus raised a hand and waved before he realized what he was doing.

“Takemi, my friend. You do not look surprised to see me.”

“The only thing I expect out of you, Hans, is the unexpected. Honestly, that is the only way I can get by anymore,” I admitted.

“We have much to discuss. Please come in. Your Freunde are already here,” Hans said, gesturing us towards the train.

“We really need to gather our gir—” Prometheus started to say, but Hans cut him off.

“Your ladies are already here, and they are safe and sound. Now come in. I just had my attendant heat some water for tea.”

Reluctantly, we stepped up into the car and followed Hans inside. We stepped into a clean, yet utilitarian space. Leather upholstered benches sat to the left and right, while the middle of the car featured a round meeting table, surrounded by simple, wood chairs. Four out of the eight chairs were filled with Hera, Layla, Kate, and to all of my surprise, Mike.

Prometheus moved forward to check on Kate, but I locked eyes with Layla, and then Mike. Ajax’s smith friend looked frazzled, to say the least.

Layla threw her arms around me and kissed my cheek when I joined them at the table, then at Hans’ insistence, we sat, and his attendant served us tea.

“Your first question is undoubtedly why am I here,” Hans said after dropping a cube of sugar into his tea. “The second is likely, why is he here,” he said, pointing at Mike, “and why are your ladies in my train car.”

“I think that covers the first wave of questions pretty good,” I admitted.

“Sehr gut,” Hans said with that disarming smile of his. “Firstly, as you have already surmised, Zurich is in turmoil. Some of the factions have diverged.”

“Meaning…?” Prometheus pushed.

“They went against the King’s implicit instructions to leave you be. The Protectorate intercepted no less than eight kill squads the night you fled the city. I am regretful that we were not able to locate the ones waiting for you outside the city, but from what I have been told, you scattered their pieces far and wide.”

“Where is Kruger?” I asked, leaning in.

“He already left Zurich, but will meet with you at the Melee,” Hans said. “You still have the full support of the Protectorate, and to a slightly lesser degree, the King. I knew you would need proof, so that is why I recovered and provided your man here with safe passage.
