CHAPTER 12
Ashleigh
I brought Wes back to the place where I had left Wyatt facing off with the moose, but he was gone. Or I had gotten the spot wrong. It was dark. Maybe my sense of direction was off.
Either way, my nerves were shot, and the wind magic was kicking up despite my attempt to control it with my breathing, the way Winter and Lillian had instructed.
What if the moose had killed Wyatt? Oh god, what if heâd died because heâd chased after me tonight? My stomach clenched as anxiety zipped through my veins. This was all my fault.
Wait. I spun around, scanning the ground. There would be a body. Moose were herbivores. My degree in random knowledge, otherwise known as liberal arts, was paying off. No body meant he hadnât been mauled to death.
Or this wasnât the right spot. I looked over at Wes. âHeâs not here. I mustâve gotten us lost.â
âNo.â Wes sniffed and shook his head. âHis scent is all over. Itâs not fresh, but he was definitely here withââ he took another breath ââa moose.â He tipped his head back, searching the trees. âBut heâs not here now.â He sighed, focusing on the dirt. âIf the ground was wet, I might be able to locate his tracks, but all I can see is the mooseâs.â
âDid you find him?â someone asked.
I turned around as more men approached. The man in front stood out from the others with his red hair and green eyes that seemed to sparkle in the moonlight. His attention flicked from Wes to me. âYou must be, Ashleigh.â He didnât bother with a handshake. âIâm Zeke.â He gestured to the other men with him. âThis is Jackson. Heâs Winterâs mate. And these two are Reason and Ranger. Wyattâs our best tracker, but he taught Reason and Ranger, so maybe they can find him.â
âHi.â I didnât know what to say. Did they know Wyatt was lost because of me? It didnât matter. I just wanted him to be in one piece. âPlease find him.â
Reason and Ranger were identical twins. They looked a little younger than Wyatt. Maybe in their early twenties? One had his black hair back in a ponytail, and the other brother had short hair. I wasnât sure which was which.
The one with longer hair nodded to me. âWeâll find him.â
Zeke didnât raise his voice, but I guess he didnât have to with a group of werewolves. Either way, his air of leadership gave every word power. He made eye contact with each of them as he spoke. âWeâll fan out in pairs to cover more ground. No lone wolves, understand? If that moose is still around, sheâs probably still agitated. Text me as soon as you find him.â He turned to Wes. âYou stay with Ashleigh and keep her safe until we find Wyatt.â
A muscle jumped in Wesâs cheek. He didnât look happy about being sidelined, but he didnât argue. âFine.â
Zeke stared at him until Wes dropped his eyes. It reminded me of those nature shows with wolves submitting to their Alpha.
