There’s a knock on the door that stirs me awake. I blink my eyes open and find myself on my Mom’s couch curled up with a blanket.

We had an amazing talk and dinner last night and I decided to crash on her couch. I needed time to regroup before I confront Archer about his feelings.

Another knock sounds on the door and I trudge over and open it. Angela stands outside her eyes are drooping. “Did you stand out there all night?”

“I was ordered to stand guard wherever you decided to stay the night.” Angela shrugs.

“Overprotective alpha thinks he doesn’t care and then does shit like this.” I grumble.

Angela steps inside the cabin and shuts the door firmly behind her. “Jara you don’t know a quarter of what that man was put through to become alpha since birth.”

“I know he beat it into his head that love is a weakness.” I rub at my arms.

“Beat it into him is the operative word.” Angela raises a brow. “The former alpha was a bastard and used almost a form of torture on Archer to make sure he never showed weakness.”

My chest aches for the child Archer once was. He didn’t have to be treated so cruelly to be named the alpha. What might have happened differently if Archer had been allowed to love people the way the gods intended?

How can I show him that love isn’t a weakness, but a strength?

“He cares about you but only in a way that his past trauma will allow for. Only what his antiquated ideas of strength and weakness will allow. It’s going to take a lot for him to open up at all.” Angela pats my shoulder.

“I can do it. If I want to have his love for the rest of my life I have to find a way to break through.” I flop down on the couch.

“We can start by going back to the pack house and getting ready for the day. McKenna has been asking when you will be ready to start checking the storerooms again.”

“Shit, I forgot all about that. Are we still under investigation?” I ask.

“Unsurprisingly, the humans backed off after you and the others were taken. We haven’t heard another peep from them about the business.” Angela snarls.

“It was all a set up from the beginning. Shit.” I stand from the couch. “I need to get back to work and have a chat with the alpha.”

I turn as my mother’s bedroom door opens. “I need to go but I will be back soon to check on you.”

“Go, love. You have your life here. I understand. Kick that alpha’s ass into submission.” My mother grins at me.

I scoop her up into a tight hug before striding to the door and pulling it open. Angela jogs up next to me as I head through the forest.

We pick our way between the trees to the small path that leads back to the pack house. It looms over us in the distance. What the hell
