NATALIE
No matter how many siliak we killed, more kept coming. We'd fought and ran until we found a clearing, but the wave of the infected was almost overwhelming.
I cried out when one latched onto my leg, its tongues wrapping around my calf. The blades on its tongue tore through my clothes, into my flesh, and I reached down and placed a hand on its head.
I imagined myself taking hold of its body like a petal in my palm ⦠then I crushed it.
Yellow, sticky blood squirted from every inch of the crushed animal, its dying cry calling more towards me.
With my hands out, I released a blast of energy that threw them back. I covered my face when flames engulfed them, then blades sliced through their burning bodies.
When I looked up, I saw Rumir. His swords, like his whole body, were drenched in yellow blood.
An iceberg appeared out of nowhere, with spikes that impaled several siliak. Lucianâs white fur was also drenched in blood.
Taking a moment to catch our breaths, I looked over my two mates. Though bloody, they were both whole. Then the whistling of arrows caught my attention.
Rehema was releasing arrow after arrow, her body covered in cuts and bruises.
I ran to her aid, just as another wave of siliak poised to strike, but she threw her bow to the ground.
âRehema! What are you doing?" I yelled. But I slowed down when her black hair turned to white.
I'd only met Rehemaâs mother once, and I'd been surprised when Iâd discovered that there was no family resemblance between them.
Eir, the Norse goddess of healing, was pale with white hair, while Rehema looked Asian like her father, with black hair and dark brown eyes, except for when she used her powers. Then her eyes turned green, like her motherâs.
But it would seem she had more than just her motherâs eyes after all.
Right now, they were shining brighter than Iâd ever seen them. Rehema's body started trembling, and then she screamed. The ground beneath us moaned in response, and the earth began to crack. Massive roots burst outward from below us, attacking the siliak around her.
I knew she was a demigoddess and had great power. But Iâd had no idea she was this powerful.
I was suddenly struck with a burst of sheer happiness that left me very confused. This wasnât a time to feel joy, but now, in this fight, killing these creatures, my chaos was relishing every moment. My head fell back, and my chaos started slipping out of every pore.
Like tentacles, it lashed out at the siliak, killing them viciously.
I laughed as limbs flew in all directions, and the more shrieks of pain I heard, the harder I fought.
"Natalie!" I heard someone calling me, but I didn't know who and didnât care to find out. I kept killing, ripping into the siliak. "Natalie, you're losing yourself!"
I froze when Lucianâs words broke through to me, and I turned to face him.
Heâd reverted back to his human form, the head of a siliak lying by his feet.
