Calli

Pizza night had been just what everyone needed. River seemed more relaxed into our situation after taking a nap with Jacob out on the outdoor sofa after school. I had seen how happy he’d been when Jacob snuggled into him and then they had both drifted off to sleep; it was possibly the most adorable thing I had seen in my life.

Jacob was tucked up tight in bed now, and it was the happiest I’d seen him since we’d lost our parents. I think this place was starting to feel more like home for him. Getting in touch with his wolf had no doubt helped as well. I needed to speak with Grey tonight about making sure we got Jacob to shift regularly. I didn’t want to risk a spontaneous shift at school. Even though it had been drummed into him as soon as he could understand words, we needed to have the talk about shifting in front of people as well. At least we had River and Holly at school in case he needed someone to intervene for him. Oh hell, now I was nervous about something else entirely.

The ringing of my phone pulled me out of my thoughts, and I answered it without even thinking.

“Hello?”

“Calli?”

“Sera? Oh thank god, you have no idea how much I’ve stepped into it right now,” I sighed.

I heard Sera chuckle down the phone. I may have only met her in person a few times, but she had been a significant presence in my childhood. She was never able to call my Mum as much as she wanted, but when she was in a place where she could, she always took the time to check in with us. Sera was the closest thing that my Mum had to a coven, and I think it was the same for her. She chose to mostly help the shifters that entered the underground, not trusting any witches into her inner circle, just in case.

“Sean has filled me in on some of your troubles and your … erm … discoveries shall we say,” she said in her thick Irish brogue. I could still tell that she was making fun of me, though.

“Did he tell you about my talisman?” I asked her, almost frightened to hear her reaction. This was akin to admitting something to a parent and waiting for the bollocking that followed.

“It was a noble, if not foolish, thing that you did. But I am proud of you nonetheless,” she sighed. “You understand what this means, though?”

“I was hoping we could find another solution,” I told her. “A way to manipulate the spell into just enough of something else that it would still work for me.”

“What do you mean?” she asked and I could tell I had piqued her interest.

“Maybe if it was targeted to just one side of my nature rather than a complete mask of everything?” I asked, hopefully.

“It would still be a mask, nonetheless. I fear it would not work.” My heart dropped in disappointment until she continued, “But you may be on to something.
