Safi and others took advantage of the new rules of journalism and the internet, where there are virtually no rules, to stage their attacks.

Religion News Service editor Kevin Eckstrom admitted he exerted no control. “I’ve had to explain journalism to Omid,” he told me, but allowed Safi to self-publish without an editor’s review. “When they get edited, they don’t want to write for us, so we let them publish their blogs without editing,” he explained.

Activists and academics, such as Safi, had discovered a back door to publishing on the internet where the professional rules of journalism, like avoiding defamation and seeking comment from an article’s subject, simply did not matter.

And this aberration of journalistic ethics wasn’t because Religion News Service was a shoestring fly-by-night operation. Based at the prestigious University of Missouri Journalism School in Columbia, Missouri, Religion News Service was founded in 1934 by journalist Louis Minsky as an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. And, over the years, Religion News Foundation operations have received about $16 million in funding from foundations. Its biggest donor is Lilly Endowment Inc., which has given it $13.3 million.
