Dean followed Leo through the cabin door. “Okay. I give up. What?”

“Oh, nothing.” He didn’t have the heart to explain what it meant to boss a ride. He stripped on his way to the bathroom, dropping his clothes along the way. There was no need to be discreet around Dean. Not anymore.

“It’s not nothing, Leo. Something is up. I think Buck actually smiled at me.”

“Yeah, that was scary.” Leo brushed his teeth and headed for his bed as Dean took his turn in the bathroom. Dean had picked up all his clothes and even set Leo’s boots in the corner.

Leo lay under the covers and thought of how nice Dean’s hands felt all over his body. It had been a long time since Leo’d enjoyed another man’s touch. It had taken a few years for Leo to be comfortable with a man after Clint.

Leo never stayed in one place for too long. He never had more than one-night stands or short trysts lasting a couple of months at the most. He went out of his way to avoid making friends too. There were a few guys who would have made great friends and even a couple of lovers Leo missed from time to time, but he never let any of them in.

Dean shut off the light and sat on the side of his bed. “Leo, I’m sorry about saying that stuff. It just came out.”

“What are you talking about?”

“What I said to Elaine…about her being the only one who mattered. She was upset, and Buck was being a dick, as usual, and those girls were loving every minute of it. I had to say something.”

Leo rolled onto his side and rested his head on his hand. “I know. It was sweet. You said exactly what Lani needed to hear, because that’s just the kind of guy you are—always saying the right thing and making everyone feel good. It’s a little annoying sometimes but—”

“Annoying?”

“Yes. You’re so damned polite all the time I doubt you even know how to get pissed-off.”

“I get pissed-off. I got pissed-off at you in the truck.”

“Right before you kissed me.” Leo rolled his eyes. “Yeah, that was really pissed-off. When was the last time you got into a fight? I mean a real, throwing-punches, gouging-the-eyes, kind of fight?”

Dean glanced around the room as he rubbed the palm of his hand on his thigh. “I got into a few scrapes in high school and college.”

“How many is a few?”

“Okay, just two. But I know Tae-Bo.”

“Tie what?”

“Tae-Bo. It’s an exercise routine with some martial arts mixed in.”

“So you can fight because you know how to exercise?”

“No it’s… Never mind. Not all of us can be shit-kickin’ cowboys you know.”

“Shit kickin’ is dancing, Dean.”

“Whatever. You know what I mean, and what’s wrong with talking to someone face-to-face instead of pounding them into the dirt? That’s the civilized way of settling your differences. It’s been my experience that it works. Talking, no bleeding.”

“And what do you do when you’re wonderful talking strategy doesn’t work?”

“It always works.
