Chapter 11
Hezekiah
The atmosphere shifted as soon as they entered the backyard. It was Saintâs first birthday, and everyone had gone above and beyond to ensure he enjoyed himself. Eva threw him a party at her parents home, and it was filled with any and everything a one year old would find enjoyable. From clowns and magicians to nursery rhyme singing bands and face painting. Everything was going perfect⦠until Miles and his wife arrived.
Hezekiah was seated comfortably in the back with Izeah, Evaâs father, and a few of her male cousins until Eva wobbled over to tell her father that Miles had arrived. In less than one second, all of the men had stood, dropped their beers, and began to make their way over.
Hezekiah made it just in time to hear Miles say, âWhat gives you the right to have a party for my son and not invite me?â
His eyes went from Miles to the woman standing next to him with a satisfied grin. Eva chuckled, tightening her grip on her red, plastic cup.
âBeing his mother gave me the right. How did you even find us here?â
âI figured you were here when I stopped by your place and you werenât there. I want to celebrate my sonâs first year of life.â
Wrapping his arm around Evaâs waist, Hezekiah pulled her into his side. It was like Miles had just noticed all the men that were surrounding her.
âWho in the hell are you?â Miles questioned, turning more in Hezekiahâs direction.
âYou donât need to be concerned with who I am until you give me a reason to come after you.â
Evaâs father, Jacob, chuckled and patted Hezekiahâs shoulder. âYou got this, son?â
âYes, sir. Go enjoy yourself.â Hezekiah waited until her father walked away to ask Eva, âYou want me to handle this?â
Her hand patted his chest gently as she shook her head. âHe can stay as long as he doesnât say or do anything disrespectful.â
âI want to take my son to my place. Dreya and I are having a party for him there.â
âIâve told you several times that Iâm not comfortable with you taking him until after youâve had supervised visits with him.â
Miles clenched jaw and fists didnât go unnoticed. Hezekiah pulled Eva behind him, motioning for Izeah to go and get Saint.
âAnd I told you Iâm not agreeing to that bullshit.â
âWell, I guess youâll have to wait until after the judge grants you partial custody, or you can stay here and celebrate with us. Either is fine with me.â
âYou act like you donât realize the kindness weâre granting you,â Dreya finally spoke up.
âAye, lil mama,â Elise called. âThis ainât got shit to do with you.â
âIt has everything to do with me. This is my husband and my stepson. Who are you?â
âPlease donât talk to her,â Eva warned, stepping back to Hezekiahâs side. âThis doesnât concern you. Heâs not listed as the father of my child, and that was his choice. I told him what it would take for us to be on the same page and for him to sign the birth certificate, but he didnât agree.
