“Hex Falls is going to be talking about this evening, and Violet’s decorating, for the next 500 years to come!” I catch Aunt Kat turning the ear of Mrs. Dumfries, her voice trilling high, as we rejoin their company in the middle the room.

“I agree,” Aunt Kit adds, her voice sounding fitful. “Everything about this is simply spectacular!”

“Stupendous, really,” Aunt Kat corrects.

“Oh, there you are!” Mrs. Dumfries catches sight of me. “I just had to come over to tell you in person how wonderful this all is!” She swoops in beside me. She’s dressed in a cocktail gown two sizes too small, looking much like she did at my aunts’ and cousin’s grand opening—like a cocktail weenie bulging out either end of a sparkly dough blanket.

“Thank you, Mrs. Dumfries,” I say.

She fixes the shimmering pillbox hat on her head, then snatches a drink off a passing waiter’s tray. “And these bubbling, mad-scientist cocktails are not only cleverly in tune with the theme of the evening,” she raises it to me, “they are to die for.” She gulps it down.

“Be careful there. Those drinks are stronger than you think,” I say as she finishes it and reaches for a second. “Too many of them, and you’ll be seeing double,” I tell her.

“Or not seeing at all,” Cousin Viv mumbles, her back to us.

“You behave yourself.” I turn around, hissing in my cousin’s ear. “I don’t want any trouble at this.”

“No trouble.” She throws up her hands, her eyes flashing, and I narrow mine and glower harder.

“And these cotton candy spun cobwebs are really a hoot.” Mrs. Dumfries reaches up, swiping one down, and pops it in her mouth. “They are candy, aren’t they?” She looks blank.

“Glad you like them, Mrs. Dumfries,” I say, excusing myself, turning around right into my Uncle Harold.

“She’s right, you know.” He scoots in beside me, his hand at my back. “You’ve gotten every detail exactly right.” He smiles. “And the decorating ain’t bad either.” He nudges me in the ribs.

“Oh, you.” I reach up, lightly kissing him on the cheek, then tip back down on my heels. “I’m glad you could come.” I link arms with him.

“Wouldn’t have missed it for the world, my pet.” He drops a kiss on the top of my head. “It’s quite the thing you’ve pulled off here, and all on your own.”

“Well, I may have had a small amount of help,” I say, looking up at Sotherby, standing on the balcony of the second floor, looking admiringly down over the crowd. He catches sight of me and nods.

He’s dressed, of course, in his gentlemanly best. The one and only suit he has to wear. Though I never tire of seeing him in it. He looks as debonair and dashing as always. I raise my glass to him, and he tips an imaginary one to me. “Well done,” he mouths, his voice rumbling through my thoughts.

“Is it everything you dreamed it would be?” I ask him telepathically.

“More,” he answers. “I couldn’t be happier.
