âHex Falls is going to be talking about this evening, and Violetâs decorating, for the next 500 years to come!â I catch Aunt Kat turning the ear of Mrs. Dumfries, her voice trilling high, as we rejoin their company in the middle the room.
âI agree,â Aunt Kit adds, her voice sounding fitful. âEverything about this is simply spectacular!â
âStupendous, really,â Aunt Kat corrects.
âOh, there you are!â Mrs. Dumfries catches sight of me. âI just had to come over to tell you in person how wonderful this all is!â She swoops in beside me. Sheâs dressed in a cocktail gown two sizes too small, looking much like she did at my auntsâ and cousinâs grand openingâlike a cocktail weenie bulging out either end of a sparkly dough blanket.
âThank you, Mrs. Dumfries,â I say.
She fixes the shimmering pillbox hat on her head, then snatches a drink off a passing waiterâs tray. âAnd these bubbling, mad-scientist cocktails are not only cleverly in tune with the theme of the evening,â she raises it to me, âthey are to die for.â She gulps it down.
âBe careful there. Those drinks are stronger than you think,â I say as she finishes it and reaches for a second. âToo many of them, and youâll be seeing double,â I tell her.
âOr not seeing at all,â Cousin Viv mumbles, her back to us.
âYou behave yourself.â I turn around, hissing in my cousinâs ear. âI donât want any trouble at this.â
âNo trouble.â She throws up her hands, her eyes flashing, and I narrow mine and glower harder.
âAnd these cotton candy spun cobwebs are really a hoot.â Mrs. Dumfries reaches up, swiping one down, and pops it in her mouth. âThey are candy, arenât they?â She looks blank.
âGlad you like them, Mrs. Dumfries,â I say, excusing myself, turning around right into my Uncle Harold.
âSheâs right, you know.â He scoots in beside me, his hand at my back. âYouâve gotten every detail exactly right.â He smiles. âAnd the decorating ainât bad either.â He nudges me in the ribs.
âOh, you.â I reach up, lightly kissing him on the cheek, then tip back down on my heels. âIâm glad you could come.â I link arms with him.
âWouldnât have missed it for the world, my pet.â He drops a kiss on the top of my head. âItâs quite the thing youâve pulled off here, and all on your own.â
âWell, I may have had a small amount of help,â I say, looking up at Sotherby, standing on the balcony of the second floor, looking admiringly down over the crowd. He catches sight of me and nods.
Heâs dressed, of course, in his gentlemanly best. The one and only suit he has to wear. Though I never tire of seeing him in it. He looks as debonair and dashing as always. I raise my glass to him, and he tips an imaginary one to me. âWell done,â he mouths, his voice rumbling through my thoughts.
âIs it everything you dreamed it would be?â I ask him telepathically.
âMore,â he answers. âI couldnât be happier.
