My eyelids felt so heavy. Like lead had been placed on them. I struggled to open them and ignored the fact that the rest of my body felt very sore. It felt like my bones had expanded in weight overnight. I glanced at the person sitting beside me.

Clayton had his head bowed and his eyes shut. He seemed to be sleeping and I was worried about disturbing him, but I needed to figure out whatever was going on. Why was Brian standing in the center of my living room? Why did he look so wretched?

I managed to wrap my fingers onto the rim of the bed and tried to pull up, but the pain was excruciating so I gave up and sank back into the bed. That woke Clayton up and he helped me adjust the pillows.

“Where am I?” I asked him.

Clay didn’t seem to have heard me, as he went about adjusting the covers and pulled the curtains apart. I squinted as the light rushed in, blinding my eyes. There was a grey painting hanging on the wall. The wall was also painted cream, so I realized this wasn’t a hospital.

“Where am I?” I asked again, and Clay moved closer to me.

“You’re in my bed, honey,” he said sweetly. I managed to crane my head so I could see the full length and breadth of the bed and scoffed. The little effort to laugh proved even more painful than I would have imagined.

“It’s really small.” I’d managed to pull a small smile onto both our faces.

“I’m a detective. I have to stay alert all the time. That means little space on the bed,” he said as he patted my damp hair. Apparently, I was still sweating profusely. “What happened back there?” he asked.

“So, detectives don’t dream of relationships?” I asked, ignoring his question. He squeezed my hands. Of course they did. He did, and that’s why I was in his bed at that critical time. He was hoping to provide a safe place for me.

A gentle silence settled between us. Clayton held my clammy hands while I stared out of the window. I felt terrible, with prickling pains all over, but I had to get up. If I didn’t make a move, whoever did this would win and I wouldn’t be able to protect my friends.

I thought of Lily and Victoria. I wondered where they were. “Victoria?” I managed to ask. Talking was taking all the strength in me.

“Lily’s busy distracting her,” Clayton whispered. “She’s been restless since you blacked out,” he added and planted a kiss on my hands.

“I need her here,” I whispered back. Victoria would be a burden to Lily if I was away from her, especially when she saw me in distress. Clayton nodded and moved away to make the call. It was excruciating but I dragged myself up to a sitting position. The tears threatened to spill out. My body had never gone through something like this before. I needed to find a solution as soon as possible.
