Chapter Nine

It was cold. Clio Fortayne shivered, even in her arctic jacket. She could see her breath and she wasn’t sure she liked that.

“Welcome to Rhein, Captain,” Captain Wallender told her, his eyes gleaming as he took in her discomfort.

It’s fucking freezing! My feet are going numb already! Clio complained on their own special, tight frequency.

“I see you made it,” Captain Wallender continued out loud, his expression unchanged. “The Commandant will be delighted to greet you.”

Is it warm in his office? Clio asked, glancing around for a building. She frowned when she couldn’t see any distortions in the snow-covered field. Is he underground?

A clattering of feet distracted her and Clio turned to the source — a company of marines dressed in white winter gear marching through the thick snow and singing a marching song as they came.

“Marines, halt!” A big gruff voice called out from the side of the formation. The marines halted precisely. “Marines, left face!” The marines turned to Clio.

“Marines, present arms!”

One hundred and thirty marines suddenly sprouted small upright metal objects. Weapons.

You’d best salute them, captain, Wallender told her, his voice grinning at her.

Clio braced to attention and returned a perfect salute.

The marines clapped their hands hard against the sides of their weapons, making a great clap sound in response.

The officer at the head of the company, turned sharply and marched over to Clio.

“Captain Fortayne, it is a pleasure to meet you,” the officer said, saluting her briskly. Clio returned it, confused. “I understand you are to train my men as they undergo their SC mods.”

“Sir, yes, sir!” Clio barked back in proper marine speak. To Wallender she growled, You set me up!

Captain Ernst Wallender, who seemed to have developed a wicked sense of humor, sent her a mental snicker. Wait for it, he chuckled at her.

“Good, then you won’t mind that we are currently on maneuvers and will continue so until the mods have taken effect,” Colonel Prince Hugo Bayern told her with a stiff jerk of his head.

“Certainly, sir,” Clio told him.

“Captain Wallender assured me that your home world climate has ensured that you will have no trouble acclimating to our world,” Colonel Prince Hugo continued, glancing lightly toward Captain Wallender who was doing his very best not to double over in hysterical laughter.

“It is as the captain says, sir,” Clio replied. You — you — you fucking marine, you!

Guilty as charged, captain, Ernst replied, his eyes dancing with glee.

What goes around, comes around, Ernst, Clio warned.

Oh, I am so afraid! So very afraid, captain! Ernst returned. His expression suddenly changed and the gleam left his eyes. I mean, Captain Fortayne, I meant no disrespect.

The Queen’s been listening this whole time, you fool, Clio replied suppressing a smirk of her own.

So have I, Owami Branford added. You’ll do, Captain Wallender. You’ll do. But I’ll have your hide if so much as a single cell of Clio’s skin gets frostbite!

Aye, Commander, Captain Wallender replied. She will be fine, I swear on my life. He couldn’t help but add, She is meine kleine schwester and I will let her come to no lasting harm.
