CHAPTER 11
Sheâs what?â Keller said, coming out of the bathroom, toweling her hair.
âSheâs sick,â Winnie said. âRunny nose, little temperature. Looks like a cold. Her mom says she has to stay home from school.â
Well, it looks like weâre having a run of good luck, Keller thought. It would be much easier to protect her inside the house.
Winnie and Nissa had spent the night in Ilianaâs room, while Keller, who was supposed to be asleep on the sofa bed in the family room, wandered the house in between catnaps. Sheâd asked Galen to stay in the guest room, and he had done just that.
âWe can have a quiet day,â she said now to Winnie. âThis is greatâas long as she gets well for Saturday.â
Winnie grimaced.
âWhat?â
âUmâyouâd better go in and talk to her yourself.â
âWhy?â
âYouâd just better go. She wants to talk to you.â
Keller started toward Ilianaâs room. She said over her shoulder, âCheck the wards.â
âI know, Boss.â
Iliana was sitting up in bed, wearing a frilly nightgown that actually seemed to have a ribbon woven into the lace at the neck. She looked fragile and beautiful, and there was a delicate flush on her cheeks from the fever.
âHowâre you feeling?â Keller said, making her voice gentle.
âOkay.â Iliana modified it with a shrug that meant fairly rotten. âI just wanted to see you, you know, and say goodbye.â
Keller blinked, still rubbing her hair with the towel. She wasnât crazy about water, especially not in her ears. âSay goodbye?â
âBefore you go.â
âWhat, you think Iâm going to school for you?â
âNo. Before you go.â
Keller stopped toweling and focused. âIliana, what are you talking about?â
âIâm talking about you guys leaving. Because Iâm not the Wild Power.â
Keller sat down on the bed and said flatly, âWhat?â
Ilianaâs eyes were that hazy iris color again. She looked, in her own way, as annoyed as Keller felt. âWell, I thought that was obvious. I canât be the Wild Power. I donât have the blue fireâor whatever.â She tacked the last words on.
âIliana, donât play the dumb blonde with me right now, or Iâll have to kill you.â
Iliana just stared at her, picking at the coverlet with her fingers. âYou guys made a mistake. I donât have any power, and Iâm not the person youâre looking for. Donât you think you ought to go out and look for the real Wild Power before the bad guys find her?â
âIliana, just because you couldnât stop that car doesnât mean that you donât have power. It could just be that you donât know how to tap into it yet.â
âIt could be. Youâre admitting that youâre not sure.â
âNobody can be absolutely sure. Not until you demonstrate it.â
âAnd thatâs what I canât do. You probably think I didnât really try, Keller. But I did. I tried so hard.â Ilianaâs eyes went distant with agonized memory. âI was standing there, looking down, and I suddenly thought, I can do it! I actually thought I felt the power, and that I knew how to use it. But then when I reached for it, there was nothing there.
