Eighteen
As we headed back to our table, Gray and Blue were having some kind of heated discussion. I was so desperate to know what they were discussing that I would have traded my library card for the ability to have amazing werewolf hearing. What were they talking about so fiercely?
We didnât even have the chance to eavesdrop a little since Gray turned his attention to us before we announced our return. He stood and held my chair out for me. Being the reasonable person I was, I accepted, knowing full well that trying to win this small battle would go as well as last time.
Still, I might have been petty by refusing to acknowledge him or that low thrum of awareness that kept me on edge around him.
Instead, I focused on the table. My water glass was filled, and there was a small salad with green leaves that Iâd never seen before. I picked up my fork, ignoring the fact that I could sense Grayâs unwavering attention. I speared a cherry tomato and a thin green leaf before pausing half-way to my mouth. I lowered my fork slightly. Liz was eating her salad, but Blue and Gray werenât. They didnât have salads. I narrowed my eyes. Why didnât they have salads?
âSomething wrong with your salad?â Gray asked, startling me.
âIs there?â I asked back, lowering my fork back to the plate. Did they do something to our salads while we were gone?
A low growl escaped his throat as he reached forward and grabbed my fork before I could grasp what he was doing. He ate what was on the fork and handed it back to me while I just watched in disbelief. âNobody did anything to your salad.â
I stared at him and then my fork, saying the first thing that came to mind, âYou just got your slobber on my fork.â
He handed me a new fork without missing a beat while Liz choked a bit. âRelax, Jane. This really is a new start between us. No tricks. Iâll even check all your food if you want.â
âIâm not worried about the restaurant doing anything to my food,â I muttered while going ahead and nibbling at my salad. Gray frowned, and a surprising bit of guilt niggled at me. I brushed away the uncomfortable feeling and asked, âWhy donât you and Blue have salads?â
âWerewolves donât eat plants,â he informed me with a slight shudder.
âYou just ate my cherry tomato,â I pointed out dryly.
âYou didnât look like you trusted it. I wanted to show you it was safe.â
âEven though you didnât like it?â I asked with suspicion. He was totally pulling my chain. Right?
âAs long as you feel comfortable, I donât have to like it,â he said softly, his expression earnest. Those piercing eyes were entirely focused on me. It was like he was searching for something, and only I had the answer. That was ridiculous though, because right now, I was feeling lost with absolutely no answers.
I swallowed hard, doing my best to ignore that weird and unwelcome feeling of warmth taking root in my belly.
