Chapter Fourteen

“Look at that ring,” Shannon Knight said, practically drooling on the sapphire and diamond ring that had belonged to Gigi’s mother. They were in Sebastian’s childhood home with his mom, a place where Gigi had always felt safe as a kid. Their home had been her safe haven. She was suddenly glad that Sebastian had wanted to stop there first. She’d missed his mom terribly, too.

After a few moments, Shannon’s head snapped up and she zeroed in on Gigi’s gaze. “Did my son finally get up the nerve to ask you to marry him?”

As Gigi expected, it only took twenty-two minutes until Shannon Knight found a way to ask if she and Sebastian had plans to head to the alter. The poor woman had spent years predicting that Gigi and her son would get married on the beach at sunset and have four kids within four years. Rolling her eyes, Gigi pulled her hand from Shannon’s and said, “No. This ring belonged to my mother.”

Shannon placed a hand over her own heart and said, “I’m sorry, Clarity. I know you miss her terribly.”

“She goes by Gigi now, Mom,” Sebastian said gently, giving his mother a kiss on the cheek.”

“Right. Old habits are hard to break,” Shannon said with a wry smile.

“It’s all right. But yes, I do miss her.” Gigi said. “But that’s what these next few days are about. We’re going to try to gather information about the day she went missing so that I can finally get some closure. If nothing turns up, that’s fine, too. I’ll just have to find a way to let her go on my own terms. But today, I’m seeking answers.

Shannon squeezed Gigi’s hand and said, “You let me know if there is anything I can do. If it’s possible, I’ll make it happen.”

“Thanks, Shannon. You’re the best. I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you were here for me back then. I wish now that I’d have kept in touch,” Gigi said, feeling ashamed of the way she’d walked away from everyone back then. Why had she let go of every relationship she’d had? “I’m sorry I stopped returning your calls. I just…” Gigi shook her head. “I was a mess.”

“Oh, honey. That was such a trying time,” Shannon said, pulling her into a hug. “I don’t fault you for a thing. You were only trying to survive it. Everyone handles trauma differently. I just wish James hadn’t isolated you so much.”

“Me, too.” It had taken Gigi a long time to realize that James had manipulated her into distancing herself from Shannon and Sebastian. Clearly, he’d thought them a threat. He’d been right of course. If they’d seen what she couldn’t, they’d have done what they could to warn her. “But he’s out of my life now, so it’s time to move forward. Thank you for everything you did back then.”

“You don’t need to thank me,” she said, pulling back and wiping at her damp eyes. “Just be happy.
