Chapter Six

The Falls

What?

The Falls.

What about them? And why are you in my head?

Because I don’t want anyone to know I’ve told you where Max is.

Oh. So, that’s where Merrick and Morgan stashed him.

They didn’t stash him. I heard he’s a bit of an explorer. Go talk to him.

I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.

I know, but I think you should.

Was she right? Should I interfere and head out to talk to him?

Ky?

I’ll think about it.

But I was pretty sure I wouldn’t think about it at all. Not when one single thought could take me to the head of the trail that led to the namesake of the town. Well, not the real namesake.

The town had been founded as Blue Bells Falls. Once upon a time, the area had been covered in an array of blue bells. They covered everything and no one quite knew why they all died out, at least no one knew anything more than rumors.

Blue Balls Falls came about because a wizard had thought he was the Goddess’ gift to all witches and was cursed with blue balls for the rest of his known existence. He disappeared from the town shortly after and no one had ever seen him again. That was the most popular rumor. No one knew for sure if it was true, but it made for an interesting tale.

I slipped when I took my first step on the trail and looked down at my little black boots. I should’ve probably changed into more appropriate clothing or at least appeared at the base of the Falls rather than the trail. I wasn’t sure where along it Max would be.

A wave of my hand up, then down, shifted my clothes to purple pants, similar to what I’d seen Baba Yaga wear before. I think she called them yoga pants. A purple shirt. And gray shoes that would hopefully be a more conducive to a short hike through the woods.

I hadn’t been this way in years and now that I was here again, I didn’t know why I had stopped coming. I’d always liked the woods. They gave me a sense of calm and in that moment, I vowed to come back more often.

The trail wound its way up and then steeply down. It was cool and damp the longer I walked, but I soon heard the rushing water of the Falls splashing down into a small pond that flowed through cracks in the rocks.

It was a shame those without magic could never venture here as long as magicals lived along the mountains and valleys that encompassed and surrounded Blue Balls Falls.

Why are you here, Kyla?

His voice in my head startled me to a stop. Max. How did you know?

I heard your thoughts. It’s what mates and families can do.

I know. I just didn’t know you were tuned in.

You’d be surprised what I know.

That doesn’t sound good. Where are you?

Keep following the path. I’m at the small area with the benches.

I could see the stream, narrow at first through the trees, then widening.
