Chapter Four

After I have pulled myself together out in the courtyard, I am helped up. We are forced to sit through breakfast in the sunroom, just the king and queen and Fiona and I. The talk is small and pleasant. I learn that Fiona has remarried, and that is how I know for sure that Felix is dead.

“He’s a good man, he was willing to accept me in my condition... He was willing to accept my grieving until after my child is born, and raise the child as his own. William Hayter is his name.”

“William Hayter, of the Georgia Hayters?”

“Yes, the same.”

That piques my interest, although of course I have never heard of the Georgia Hayters. But if the queen of England has, then they must be a powerful family. I marvel at Fiona, managing to snag yet another husband, and a powerful one, probably wealthy, probably decent, in seemingly no time at all and with a litany of things stacked against her. I glance at the queen, watch her process the news. She purses her lips, looks at me, then focuses back on her éclair, which she eats with a knife and fork, causing the cream inside to bulge out when she slices it and then scooping it back up with the chocolate glazed dough. She is just a bit concerned that Fiona’s husband can protect her from any threats of the royal kind. Interesting. Maybe I’m not doomed just yet.

Fiona eats more than I have ever seen her eat before, and I fill myself up, too. I feel normal with her around, almost like my life was never derailed and my heart destroyed. We are allowed to retire.

Up in my room, Fiona takes a quick look around. Her suitcase is set inside of the door, and she opens it, digging around for a nightgown, then changing. Without any discussion, she climbs into my bed. I join her, laying my head down on the soft pillows, hearing her sigh as she stretches tired and sore muscles, rubs her baby bump.

“I need naps every day since I entered my second trimester. It’s just exhausting. Not to mention that the ship came in before dawn this morning.”

“Can I?”

“Of course.”

I snake my hand out under the covers, rest it on her bump. She pressed her hand down on mine, feeling around, concentrating.

“There, I think that was a kick. Did you feel it?”

“No...” I frown. Does the baby already not like me?

“...There?”

“Oh.” I do feel the nudge. Like a water balloon getting flicked.

“That’s our baby...” She smiles a natural smile, shuts her eyes and looks peaceful for a minute. Then her eyes drift open again, long lashes fluttering. “I’m really very lucky. William is unbelievably kind, he didn’t flinch at the prospect of raising another man’s child.”

“As long as he gets you.”

She tips her head in agreement. “He’s bald but not really ugly. I’m sure I’ll grow to love him, especially once the baby is born... We live in a big house on the coast in Georgia, with plenty of help.
