CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

John’s Electronics Repair Shop, West Hollywood, California, United States

Although Rose knew that she had to tell London everything that Bermuda had explained to her, she didn’t think the timing was right. He seemed really focused on their current mission and excited to share with her what he’d learned. There was no immediacy to their situation or really any decision to make yet on the new magical race. Therefore, Rose decided to wait until they could really talk and explore their potentials with clear heads.

It was still so bizarre to Rose to see two Chinese dragons tangling through the air. That was probably because it took her so long to get used to Elvis. For the longest time, she kept questioning her reality and thinking that she was losing her mind. That was definitely because before that moment that Elvis popped out of her piano, she didn’t live in a world of magical creatures. But then there was also the fact that she learned that her whole life was a lie and that magic was real and flowing in her veins. Needless to say, it was a lot to compute.

Seeing Elvis and Dolly interacting was still messing with Rose’s brain because it was so surreal. The fact that her chimera was a Chinese dragon who talked was weird enough. But then to find out that London, her counterpart in this world, in so many different ways, also had a Chinese dragon as his chimera was really crazy. However, it totally made sense. They were two parts of a whole. She had Paternus and he had Maternus as his knife. They shared the same destiny. Why wouldn’t they both have talking, Chinese dragons as their protectors?

“I don’t mean to brag,” Elvis began snaking side to side through the air in front of the blue dragon who was mimicking his movement, like learning from him.

“Of course you do,” Rose cut in. “You live to brag.”

He glared at her briefly. “Will you please not interrupt. Adults are talking, child.”

Rose laughed, glancing at London sitting opposite of her on a stool. “He doesn’t even know how old he is, but he calls me a child. The Elders took his birthday away for being childish and making everything all about him.”

London chuckled at this. “That seems about right.”

“As I was saying,” Elvis continued, returning his attention to the other Chinese dragon. “You’ll have to earn your fire magic. It wasn’t hard for me, but I’m an exception. The dragons were all very impressed by how I sped through the test. It might be much more difficult for you.”

“I’m prepared to do whatever it takes,” Dolly said adamantly, her Tennessee accent making her sound like she was singing rather than talking. “Where do I begin?”

“We will have to contact my Aunt Sophia,” Rose stated. “She can make the arrangements at the Gullington with the Dragon Elite. That’s how Elvis got his fire breathing. But don’t let him fool you, he almost got eaten and he had to be quiet for like a whole minute for a test, which I think was what almost killed him the most.
