CHAPTER FOURTEEN

~Estelle~

Estelle folded her hands into her lap. “And I feel as though everything I’ve worked for is slipping through my fingers, but I can’t make myself care.” She was sitting in the office of Dr. Jane Marston, the school counselor. One of her professors had referred her here when Estelle had failed to make it for the midterm exam and showed no interest in making it up.

Dr. Marston nodded sympathetically. “It sounds awful, Estelle. I have to admit, many of us had wondered what happened to Professor Willoughby. He just disappeared without a trace, and that was very unprofessional of him. In many ways, you’ve been victimized. This isn’t your fault.”

“I feel hollowed out,” said Estelle. “It’s not that I’m sad or anything. I’m… nothing. I wake up and I think about doing the things that I have to do, but I simply can’t muster the energy. Nothing matters. I’m empty inside.”

“You’re talking about depression,” said the doctor. “And there are treatments for such things.”

“Like medication?” said Estelle. “I guess I could try something like that.” She shrugged.

“I meant magical treatments, actually. That’s my specialty,” said Dr. Marston. “However, if you’d like to try a medical treatment, you’re welcome to do so. I have a doctor that I work closely with and I would be happy to get an appointment set up for you, if that’s what you’d like.”

Estelle considered. “Well… what would the magical treatment be?”

Dr. Marston lifted her finger. “One moment.” She got up out of her chair and went to a filing cabinet that sat next to the window in her office.

Estelle began to notice her surroundings for the first time. These days, she felt as if she was in a tunnel, and she didn’t see much of anything except what was right in front of her. Even that seemed very far away. But looking around, she took in the office, which was cluttered with candles and bottles of herbs mixed in with tiny statuettes of cats and squirrels. All the furniture, including the lights, had been swathed in patterned tapestries. It was a dim and gauzy sort of place, comfortable and jumbled.

Dr. Marston rummaged through the filing cabinet and then came up with a necklace that had a blue stone dangling from the chain. “Here we go,” she said, coming and sitting down. She held up the necklace and tapped the stone. “These crystals have magical powers. Now, you say that your depression is making it impossible for you to function. You can’t follow a schedule or do your class work or even eat.”

“I just don’t see the point in any of it.” Estelle felt weary. She wasn’t exactly sleepy, but she wished she were lying in bed right now instead of doing this. This seemed like an especially lot of work, and she didn’t feel like putting in the effort.

“Well, we can magically extract all those depressive feelings and imprison them here in the crystal. You’d need to wear it all the time, even
