CHAPTER 15

Brandeis appeared in the kitchen, as quiet as a cat. “The altar is ready.”

Sarah Jane and Susanna startled at the sound of his deep voice.

“Thank you, Brandeis,” Sarah Jane said.

“Gather the others and meet me in the northwest corner of the property.”

Sarah Jane rounded up her sisters, Devon, and Analise, and headed out. When they arrived, Brandeis had set up a small stone slab raised off the ground with two more stones. A gleaming silver dagger lay in the center of it.

“Brandeis, what exactly are we sacrificing here?” Sarah Jane asked.

“You must each give your blood,” he replied, placing a silver bowl next to the dagger on the stone slab.

Vanessa appeared next to her. “Don’t do this,” she warned. “You owe this creature nothing.”

“Shut up, Vanessa,” Sarah Jane said.

“You could die if you do this.”

“Sarah Jane, is your spirit guide friend here again?” Rainy asked.

“She is,” Annalise said. “She’s mad that Sarah Jane’s going to do this.”

Brandeis shifted his gaze to the space next to Sarah Jane, where Vanessa stood. He growled deep in his throat and bared his human teeth. Vanessa didn’t hesitate to growl right back at him.

“I can see right through the heart of you, lion. You’re too cowardly to even show your true face.”

“His true face?” Sarah Jane stared at Brandeis.

“Yes. He is neither a mountain lion nor a man. It is a curse.”

“Is that true, Brandeis? Are you cursed to be here? One of my ancestors cursed you?”

Brandeis made a squeaking sound in the back of his throat. “It doesn’t matter how I became this thing, only that I carry out my duty.”

Sarah Jane touched his arm and looked deep into his golden eyes. “I will do everything I can to free you. I will break that curse.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” said Rainy.

“I’m not promising anything, but if it takes my lifetime to do it, I will do everything I can to free you,” Sarah Jane said.

Brandeis stared into Sarah Jane’s eyes for one moment more. Then he bowed his head. “Thank you, madam. I appreciate the sentiment.” His face softened for the first time, and Sarah Jane could see his feline features blending with those of his human features. “Come,” he said. “I must draw your blood. Hold out your hand.”

Sarah Jane offered her palm, and Brandeis picked up the silver dagger, lifting it into the air. She braced herself for the pain as he quickly swiped it across her wrist, causing a deep gash that bled into the silver bowl. Instinctively, she tried to stem the flow, but Brandeis stopped her.

“No,” he said. “You must let the blood drip into the vessel.”

After a moment, he wrapped his hand over the wound, and the bleeding stopped. When he drew back his fingers, there wasn’t even a scar.

Susanna stepped forward and allowed Brandeis to cut her wrist, followed by Rainy, Amy, and finally, Cass. He held the bowl in front of them, mixing all of their blood together.

“Now repeat after me,” he ordered.
