CHAPTER 12

Repercussions

Joey angled the Frazer up Sable’s drive and the festive air of the carnival excursion quickly faded. They'd ridden the Ferris wheel not once, but three times, and several other rides, too. Although it was almost ten o’clock at night, the porch was fully lit. Moths the size of sparrows darted in and out of the fixtures, competing for the brightest spot. Mr. Courtney and Sable were sitting on the floral print glider. The motion of the swing stopped the moment Joey’s headlights swept the front of the house.

Mr. Courtney stepped to the edge of the porch as Joey opened Callie’s door.

"Good evening, Mr. Courtney," Joey said.

Callie preceded Joey up the path. She ducked in behind Mr. Courtney only to stop short when Sable shot her a frigid look. She opened her mouth to explain where she and Joey had been, but Mr. Courtney’s deep voice cut her off.

"You enjoy yourself over in Brookside?" he asked Joey.

"How’d you know about—?"

"You go on stage with Robbie Q?"

"Well, yeah, but—"

"Are you out of your mind, boy? You are not some hillbilly banjo player. Are you trying to destroy your career?"

"No, sir, I was just having some fun."

"Some fun?" Mr. Courtney stomped down the porch steps. "In this business, marketing is a science. It does not involve fun. Walter and I groomed you for the top of this industry and you go off on your own and play a country fair? For free? Do you know how many calls I’m going to get tomorrow from other honky-tonk outfits wanting me to hire you out? That is not what Joey Tempo is about. You have an image to think about, and I expect you to keep that in mind when you feel the urge to," he slanted a look at Callie, "have some fun."

Callie bit back a stinging retort to his rude inference. The ability to dole out thinly disguised insults obviously ran in the Courtney family.

"Mr. Courtney, I’m well aware of my responsibilities," Joey said, his face serious. "It was just a carnival. I didn’t think—"

"You aren’t paid to think, boy. You got Walter and me for that. From now on, any public appearances you intend on making, you clear them with my office first. Is that understood?"

Joey lowered his gaze and shoved his hands into his pockets. "Yes, sir."

"Good. Then goodnight."

"Goodnight, sir," Joey mumbled.

"Girls, come in the house now." Sable’s father stalked up the porch steps and into the front hall.

Joey turned to head back to his car. He looked like a stray dog that had just been kicked in the gut. Callie wanted to run to him, to console him, but Sable beat her to it. As soon as her father was out of sight, she flew past Callie and pulled Joey to a stop.

Callie hung back in the shadows of the porch and watched their reunion. It was Sable’s job to console him. But damn it! After what they’d shared tonight, she wanted it to be her job.

Joey and Sable spoke in hushed tones, and then embraced briefly.
