Gena felt the comfort of Olivia's hand on hers.

She looked at Bayn, seated at the end of the counter, his eyes boring into her face, arms crossed.

She sighed, stomach knotting.

Bayn's voice was soft as he spoke to her. "Djinns are powerful beings. Among the most ancient. Older than dragons."

"I don't remember my early years much." She shrugged. "I existed, doing as I pleased, going where I fancied. Humans were an enigma. I do remember that. So different. Mortal. Yet like a lit tallow wick in the long dark nights. Some of them anyway." Her eyes turned to Olivia.

She mentioned the day Olivia had wished Gena her freedom. Gena had gifted her longevity for her incredible generosity.

"In those earliest days, I was young," she went on. "Naive, I suppose."

"She fell in love," Olivia said to Bayn.

Gena dropped her gaze to her hands. "I thought he loved me too. He was the first person I ever gave longevity to." Her gaze returned to Olivia's face, who nodded and offered a warm smile. Returning her gaze to Bayn, she straightened her shoulders and stumbled headlong into her tale. Olivia was the only person she'd ever told it to, so despite how much she'd relived the events in her mind, the words were awkward on her tongue.

"Conrad was learning to be a sorcerer. I found him alone in the woods practicing his magic. Curious, I engaged him." She smiled. "I wasn't shy in those days. Just the opposite. I demanded to know what a human was doing with such gifts. He told me he'd seen others do such things as he did; moving objects with his words and a wave of his hands. Drawing energy to replenish his own, pushing energy into something else.

We began as friends and then became lovers. Being immortal, we both thought it would be prudent for him to also be long-lived so we could be together always. And we were inseparable for decades as he learned his magic. I loved him more and more. I couldn't say why. I should like to think it wasn't just his handsome face and thick blond hair. There was a charm to him, a strong charisma. I enjoyed making him happy, and he seemed to thrive on it.

One day, after our love making, he brought up the subject of my name. My true name. If we were to be together always, there should be no secrets between us."

Gena's heart hammered in her chest as the emotions she'd felt all those centuries ago rolled back through her as though it were happening again in the recounting.

"My true name. My true identity. My essence. The core of my power." She drew a deep breath. "He used it to bind me to the lamp. My power, my identity, its essence, is meshed with mine."

Olivia moved away to get a glass of water, which she gave to Gena.

Gena nodded her thanks, glancing at Bayn. He remained still, stone-faced.

"To what purpose?" he asked, his voice so low she almost didn't hear him.
