Chapter 17

WITH NO HORSES TO STABLE, I directed my father and brother around to the back entrance of the Ram’s Head Inn, and we headed up the back stairs to our rooms. Even with the moon out, it was still early enough that I doubted my roommates had already turned in for the night. They were no doubt huddled around the city map, planning our escape. At least, I hoped they were.

I stopped by my room first to find it empty, as I expected. My legs were shaking, I was so giddy at the chance to introduce my friends to my family. To have my father and brother meet the prince. I just hoped Dakaran didn’t stick his foot in it by saying, or doing, anything stupid.

I could see light under the third door on the right, which was the room we had dedicated to taking our meals and discussing our plans. I took a deep breath and turned the handle.

Those inside hopped to their feet, several drawing their swords. I felt a sense of pride at their readiness. Made me look good in front of my family.

“It’s me,” I said, my father and brother standing in the shadows behind me. “Though, I do have a surprise.”

“Did you get the map?” Dakaran asked.

“Even better,” I said as I stepped inside and motioned for my father and brother to join me. “I want to introduce you to Narris and Jorn . . . My father and brother.”

The men all turned, shuffling toward the front to get a better look as my father and brother stepped into the candlelit room and removed their hoods.

“Your father and brother?” Stumpy stared, like all the rest. “How is that possible?”

I couldn’t help but grin. “I have no idea.” I walked over and shut the door, then turned to my father and brother. “Let me introduce you to my friends. They are Elondrian Lancers in the king’s service.”

“I’m not a lancer,” Dakaran huffed before I could start giving names.

“You got that right,” Gellar chided with a wry smirk.

I rolled my eyes. “I’d like to introduce you to His Highness Dakaran, the crown prince of Aldor.”

My father and brother looked at me as though unsure if they were supposed to bow or not. My father did manage a slight bow, my brother following suit.

“It is an honor to meet you, Your Highness,” my father said.

“It won’t be once you get to know him,” Fipple said, earning a few chuckles from some of the others.

Dakaran balled his fists, but he did his best to retain his composure as he nodded his appreciation for my father and brother’s deference. “It is an honor to meet the one responsible for raising such an incredible talent,” he said, “though I hear it is a trait shared by most of the Upaka.”

I turned to the others, who were waiting anxiously to be introduced as well. “This is Barthol,” I said, going around the room, “and Gellar, and that’s Fipple and Waylen, and Stumpy, there beside Dakaran.
