Chapter 24

EVEN WITH THE LOOMING deadline, the next two weeks seemed a nice reprieve from the constant threat of starvation hanging over our heads. With the pickers being allowed back in the market, we were once again able to start earning, which eventually led to something besides peppered broth. Of everyone, Muriel was the most relieved, as she had taken to sleeping in the pigeon coop to fend off those hungry enough to eat her birds.

Both Reevie and Sapphire had been allowed to stay at Wildfire until healed enough to be transported back to the Temple. Apparently, Red and Sapphire had remained surprisingly civil during their stay, mostly on account that Sapphire was too weak to fall for Red’s goading, and Red didn’t find much sport in hassling an injured opponent.

It had taken Reevie two days before he’d finally opened his eyes. I checked in as often as I could, but with both Reevie and Sapphire out of commission, the daily running of Hurricane had fallen on my shoulders, which made finding time to figure out how we were going to earn our tribe’s place in the Guild rather difficult. I didn’t realize how much the two had done until they were no longer there.

By the time they’d healed enough to be transported back to the Temple, things had gotten pretty out of hand. Clearly, I wasn’t well suited to running a tribe on my own. For example, without someone there to make sure the cleaners were doing their jobs, there wasn’t a single floor anywhere in the Temple that wasn’t covered in dirt, and the rooms were beginning to stink like a dung pile, as no one had been there to empty the chamber pots.

Sapphire came close to ripping her stitches as she dressed down those who’d let it get that way, which, to my dismay, included me.

Once Reevie healed enough to sit up in bed, he ordered the books of accounting be brought in for him to look over. I think I saw tears in his eyes right before he spewed out an entire string of new medical curses that had me running for the door.

But none of this compared to the reaction I received from my co-chieftains when they learned what I had agreed to for admission into the Guild. If Sapphire had been armed, I might have been laid up beside Reevie with a hole in my gut. As it was, I had to duck a few jars of herbs that she’d flung at my head. Reevie had been too weak to throw anything himself, but the names he’d decided I had earned were enough to make a grown man blush.

“So,” I said to Master Fentin, “I decided it would be best for my own health to come help you in the shop today.” I pulled a book off the shelf and ran the feathered duster over it. The dust floated into the air only to land on the unsuspecting book beside it, leaving me to wonder why I was wasting my time.
