I wasnât nearly as confident as I led Frost to believe. But the only chance I had of him going along with things was projecting confidence. He trusted me. Sometimes more than he should. But this time I knew I was right. I knew that the answer to our problems didnât lie in visiting the other courts. It involved getting to the root of things. To where these so-called Dwellers came from.
I thought over my motherâs instructions. Sheâd told me to deliver the envelopes, but sheâd also talked about me having to step up. This was stepping up. This was trusting the instinct that I knew was going to become something a whole lot more. All high fae developed a gift, and I knew I had one brewing under the surface.
âThank you for your patience. We had a few things to discuss.â I sensed everyone knew about the feelings growing between Frost and I, so hopefully they thought our talk related to that. Either way, it didnât matter. I had to push on. âI'm going to finish delivering, but I donât want to go alone.â
King Leon nodded. âUnderstood. Please feel free to bring Frost. We will of course miss his expertise in your absence.â
âThank you, but I need more than Frost.â I braced myself for the kingâs reaction.
âWho else do you request?â
âPreston and James.â The first name would be expected, but not the second.
James laughed. âOh. Iâm honored. You worried your wolves wonât provide enough protection? You want a real man?â
Frost growled low. James smirked. I was starting to think the guy didnât have any other expressions.
âThat is fine.â The king nodded.
âAnd Lacey. I want Lacey too.â
âIâd be happy to go.â Lacey sat straight up in her chair.
âWhy would you need my Lacey?â King Leon narrowed his eyes.
Of course he wouldnât want his daughter at risk, which is why if he let her come, my chances of making it back in one piece would be much higher. Itâs not that I wanted to put my friend in danger, but I had to protect my court, and that meant making sure I wasnât being led into some sort of trap.
âDoes it matter why she wants me there?â Lacey frowned. âIâm her friend, and Iâm just as committed to the cause as she is.â
âThink of what you are suggesting.â King Leon stood. âWhy should we risk two heirs?â
âRisk two?â I felt my voice lilt. That wasnât the plan. I took a few deep breaths before continuing. âWhat? Are you implying itâs dangerous?â
Lacey took my hand. âBecause if thatâs the case, why let Wren go? Isnât she worthy of as much protection as me?â
No. Not in his mind. But I did wonder if heâd actually admit that.
âOf course I want to protect Wren. But it was up to her mother whether to involve her or not. Just as it is up to me whether to involve you.â He shot me a look to let me know what he thought of my decision to try to pull his daughter in.
