Brydie

I flinched as her voice fractured the silence. She had a Scottish brogue, layered in countless intonations, at once light and lilting, but also deep and low, at once softly quiet, but also a piercing shout. It was a cacophony of sound that assailed my ears, but at the same time soothed the hurt it caused—as if her words were a discordant orchestra, and yet at the same time, a sweet symphony.

I surreptitiously rubbed my damp palms down my jeans. “Who are you?”

Her eyes flew open. She smoothly sat up and stared at me, a pout on her lips. “Are we going to play that game, Brydie?”

Her eyes were liquid silver, so bright they rivaled the stars at night. But the rest of her face was blurry, indistinct, and I couldn’t clearly perceive her features. My brow furrowed. It was apparent that she knew me, but I still had no idea who she was.

One corner of her mouth lifted in a small smile before she flung her head back, raising her arms above her head in a languid cat stretch. There was no shame in her nakedness, no thought for modesty. I felt my cheeks bloom with heat, but I refused to break my gaze from her form, determined not to capitulate to her blatant teasing.

The petite woman lowered her arms and fluidly pushed off the stone, bending down to pick up a simple, white cotton dress that had been laid on the stones at the water’s edge. She pulled it over her head, smoothing the material down her damp body. Then her eyes once again met mine. This time they were piercing, with a deadly edge, and her tone was demanding as she asked me pointedly, “Why are you here, Brydie?”

I hesitated, not wanting to share why I was there. But the longer I held her gaze, the more I felt a pressure building in my mind. It had an alien quality to it as if it held thoughts that were not mine. Then I sensed the taint of magic—a signature on the air. The scent was bright and fresh: pine trees with a sharp hint of frost. Recognition bloomed. Panic clawed up my throat as I realized this woman held immeasurable power, an eminence so intense that it had the potential to obliterate everything in its path.

Think, Brydie, think! A vision of McKenzie arose. I couldn’t see her, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t feel her. She’d told me she would be here, watching. Therefore, if this woman posed a threat, McKenzie would have pulled me out by now. Given she hadn’t, that told me I was safe—for now, at least.

“Are you going to waste my time, Brydie?” the woman asked in a sharp voice. “I understand you have a problem, and I have been called in to fix it. Time is of the essence. Let’s move along, child—ask me what you need.”

“I… I…” my voice trailed off as I realized I had no idea how to answer that question.
