CHAPTER TWELVE

The following morning Taryn woke to find Chrystian still at her side and Lazryn standing near the window. “Good morning, dearest one,” Chrystian smiled fondly.

“Morning,” she replied, the cracks in her voice showcasing her continued delicate state.

“It’s good to see you awake and much cooler,” Lazryn teased walking over to take a closer look.

“Is there anything you would like this morning?” Chrystian inquired.

“A drink of water and a bath would be nice.”

“From your lips to my ears,” Chrystian smiled before jetting from the room to fill the bathtub and fetch a glass of cool water.

Lazryn sat down beside her, studying her eyes closely, looking for any sign of his sister within them. “How do you feel?”

“Better than yesterday, I guess.”

Patting her hand, he smiled awkwardly. “If you would excuse me for a moment, Taryn, I need to have a word with Chrystian.”

“Yeah, sure.”

He rushed into the bathroom and found Chrystian pouring a particular mixture of oils into the running water. “What are you doing, Chrystian?”

“Preparing a bath with her favorite scents. Besides, it is not as though I haven’t changed her clothes before.”

“You know what I meant. She’s only a child and you are pining after a woman that no longer exists.”

Stopping dead in his tracks, he glared in Lazryn’s direction. “Due to the sensitive nature of our current predicament, I will show you leniency for speaking to me in such a way. But it would serve you well to remember who commands and who follows.”

“Of course, please forgive me. But I am only trying to point out that no matter what resides within her, she is still only a child, and she’s not in any condition to bathe alone.”

“Well then I guess we must consider our options. You can return to Mors and bring back one of the chamber maids to assist her. However after her purpose has been fulfilled, one of us will have to claim her gifts in order to protect the girl.” The furrowed brows and pursed lips on Lazryn’s face was exactly what he had counted on. “Very well then, option two it is. I promise to be an absolute gentleman.”

Watching as Chrystian headed for the door, Lazryn exhaled loudly. “There is an option three.”

A smirk formed upon his face as he exhaled. “I never realized how fond you were of her.”

“It’s hard not to be when you consider that I’ve never known anyone so brave and giving,” Lazryn shrugged.

Stepping up and placing his hands on either shoulder, he locked eyes with his brother-in-law. “Oh, but you have. Your sister knew from a young age I would be the death of her, yet she chose to stay by my side until the end, sparing me the pain and guilt of my intentions towards her. Which brings me to another similarity between our guest and dear, sweet Loryn...she suffered from visions as well.”

Lazryn stayed quiet, fighting to keep those painful memories from seeping out from their cage and filling him with the particular type of rage and vengeance he unleashed only when absolutely necessary.
