Chapter 10
At home, Sam stepped through the back door and crossed the living room to the kitchen. His dad was sitting at the table sipping his coffee. A plate with the remains of eggs, ham, and grits sat in front of him.
âMorning.â Sam was about to head upstairs and clean up when his dad stopped him.
âHowâs your chin?â Dad bobbed his coffee mug toward him.
Caressing the abrasion, which had scabbed over, Sam gave his dad a wary frown before glancing toward his mom, who was pointedly avoiding them by pouring herself a mug of tea by the stove.
âItâs okay.â
His dad cleared his throat, nodded, and looked away as if that was the end of the conversation. But then he glanced out of the corners of his eyes toward Sam again. âThe wind last night knocked down a maple in the back of the property. Damaged the goddamn fence I just repaired.â He paused to sip his coffee. âAfter you eat and get changed, come out and help me remove it.â His voice was gruff, but Sam detected something else in his tone. Not compassion. Not leniency. But something softer than the bark heâd been biting Sam with since picking him up at the bus station.
Without another word, his dad drained his coffee, set the empty mug on the table, grabbed his hat, and made his way out of the kitchen and out the back door.
Sam stared after him, a little dazed, then glanced back at his mom. She had set her tea down and clutched a hand towel against her stomach as if sheâd been drying her hands and stopped. Her expression was somewhere between a smile and a smirk. It was the expression of a mother who knows all, sees all, and plays the part of domestic hero with subdued poise. She was a matriarch proud to be the super glue that held her family together.
âWhat was that all about?â Sam glanced toward the door again as his mom flipped on a burner.
She took a step back and peered out the window at his dad as he crossed the drive toward the stable. Then she smiled over her shoulder at Sam. âDonât tell him I told you this, butâ¦â She sliced off a pat of butter and dropped it in the skillet. âIt really bothered your father when he saw Matt and Kevin beating you up yesterday.â
âWaitâ¦what? He saw?â
She nodded.
âWhy didnât heâ?â
His mom held up her hand. âBefore you think he didnât try to help, he did. But when he saw Cooper step in, he backed off.â
Sam sank into a chair at the table then turned his dismayed gaze out the window. He couldnât see his dad, but he knew he was out there.
He wasnât sure what to make of what his mom had told him. Not that he should be surprised that his dad would feel protective enough to defend him, but after the way heâd practically spit on him for the past few days, he couldnât reconcile that side of his father with this new one.
