Much later, as they lay entwined together, their passion sated, Tritus broached what was on his mind. “Cal?”

“Hmmm?” she asked, stretching languidly against his side as one of her hands trailed up and down his chest—something she was wont to do after they’d sated their passion.

“This new tradition we are embarking on together is only beginning. In a few nights, I’d like us to visit one of the villages I trade at. I want you to see how your people celebrate Yule. The chieftain has invited us both, and if you are up for it, I hoped you’d want to join in on the festivities. But if it is too much, we can always watch from a distance and return on another day before the solstice ends.”

She froze against him, and then her head snapped up to seize his gaze. “To the village? Together?”

He nodded, his face open so she could see his anticipation at the idea. “Yes. You could use glamor so no one knows who you are. The village people know I have a woman; I told them you were a healer of sorts, so your secret is safe. Think on it, Cal; this would be a great opportunity to celebrate the real spirit of Yule, not just with me but with your people as well.”

Her face began to close, and his stomach plummeted; she was not open to the idea.

Tritus rushed out, “Please, Cal. This would make me happy. Consider it for that alone.”

Her eyes flicked over his features, her own now neutral, careful. “You said . . . you said that Yule is also a time of fertility. Will we—are you . . . going to participate?”

He froze. Did she . . .? Tritus suddenly snorted. “No, Cal! How could you say that? I am not suggesting we visit the village to celebrate Yule with others! You are the only one I will be sharing a bed with—now and forever.” He grabbed her hands and tugged her to him, tilting her face so he could look into her eyes. “You know this, Cal. Deep in your heart, you know this. Stop letting the fear win. Trust in me—trust in us.”

Her throat bobbed, and Tritus had the sudden urge to run his hand down her shining, moonlight hair. The strands felt silky soft, yielding to his touch. As if following their lead, Cailleach leaned close, pressing herself into his arms. She released a soft sigh as he silently gave her what she needed, the tight squeeze of his arms pulling her even closer as he whispered against her hair, “I would like us to attend the festivities together, and it will be exciting to freely wander and celebrate without risk of ire or judgment if you are glamored. It will be wonderful, Cal. Trust me.”

She said nothing.

Tritus waited.

Eventually, Cailleach pulled away and stared up at him, silver eyes gray with heavy resignation. He didn’t know why she looked so reluctant, but that mystery was soon forgotten when she whispered, “Yes, I’ll go with you.
