My fingers couldn’t hit the numbers quickly enough as I made calls to Ty, Lauren, and Eric to relay the news. Even if it were to turn out to be for a brief time, all of our spirits were uplifted. I was on my way to tell the one person who needed to hear my news more than anyone else.
When I walked into Jason’s room at the Behavioral Health Center, he wasn’t there. The room was neat, the bed made, tabletops clear. Checking the room number, I saw I was in the right one. Seconds after the sound of a toilet flushing, the bathroom door opened and out walked my friend.
“There you are,” I said. “For a minute, I thought you had been released.”
Glancing at me, he walked toward to bed, replying, “The doctor said I can probably get out of here tomorrow.”
Noticing, I pointed to his wrists, “I see they removed your stitches.”
“Yeah, I’ll have to wear long sleeves from now on.” He crossed his hands, grabbing his wrists and shielding them from my sight.
As he passed me, I touched his shoulder.
“I have news,” I told him.
“Really? What?” He climbed on the bed and lay across it, ready to listen.
Slowly and methodically I laid out what I had discussed with David. Jason already knew all of what I said, and it wasn’t until I told him about the oleandrin poisoning that he showed any emotion. The realization that in fact Grumman was murdered, and by someone who was perceived to be his best friend, showed in Jason’s eyes.
As his hand rose to cover part of his face, I saw the rough red scar on his wrist. I found the sight of it unbearable and looked away.
“The thing to remember is that they have nothing on you, Jason; no motive, no proof that you had access to that kind of poison. Everything points to Nicki now.” As I said this, I sat down on the foot of the bed and reached over, touching his leg to emphasize my point.
Jason smiled and sat up. Leaning forward, he hugged me tightly. Into my shoulder he said, “Thank you for all you’ve done for me. I know I’ve been terrible to you, and you’ve put up with a lot. I’m sorry.”
“What are friends for?” I said, feeling emotion welling up. Then like children at play, I pushed his back against the bed pillows. “So, you said you’ll be released tomorrow?”
