Chapter Two

"Shit! This snow is really starting to come down!" Steve squinted his green eyes against the bright blanket of white surrounding them.

"And the wind's picking up." Rick shivered even though he was layered up with thick, thermal long underwear, jeans, wool sweater, and full camouflage gear.

"Fuck me, but I've had about enough of this shit." Steve secured his crossbow and began to climb down out of the deer stand.

"Where are you going?" Rick frowned.

They couldn't let a little snow stop them from the hunt. They'd only been out here a couple of hours.

"I'm heading back to the cabin, Rick. This shit's for the birds." Steve winced as a blast of wind ripped through the woods and pushed him back. "We're not going to catch anything but our deaths out here."

The snow was already deep enough to reach past Steve's ankles. Rick sighed in resignation.

Steve was right. The snow and wind were blasting them. Elyse's warning about a blizzard looked right on target. The storm had definitely turned to the south. Reluctantly, he climbed down and joined Steve. They trudged back to the cabin before white-out made them lose all sense of direction.

Tony and Ian were already inside, and Tony was setting his socks and boots in front of the fireplace to dry while Ian knelt and held his palms out to the blaze.

"Good, you made a fire," Steve said, shivering.

Tony turned as Rick and Steve shoved the door closed behind them to block out the cold

wind and snow. He and Steve were out of breath and by now Rick was fucking freezing.

"You two give up, too?" Tony stood up next to Ian.

Steve tore off his gloves and unzipped his camouflage coat. "Hell, yes. That shit's lethal out there."

"Did you get anything?" Ian looked over his shoulder, his brownish-blond hair hanging in damp curls over his forehead and into eyes so blue and large they nearly glowed.

Rick shook his head. "Nada. You?"

Ian shrugged and shook his head in reply. "Nope. Seems not even the deer are coming out in this shit."

The wind howled by the window as if to prove Ian's point.

"I'm glad I stocked the pantry then," Steve said, tearing out of his wet, snow-covered clothes. "I'm taking a shower, and then I'll make dinner." Steve turned toward Rick. "Wanna join me?"

Rick froze. What the fuck? Had Steve just asked Rick to shower with him? Rick glanced

toward Ian and Tony, who looked like they weren't sure if Steve was joking or not. "Fuck you, no way!" he said, turning back to Steve.

Steve broke out in laughter as he pulled off his skull cap. His blond hair was damp with sweat and stuck to his forehead. "You should have seen your face, Rick!" Steve's eyes twinkled.

Tony and Ian joined in and laughed, but Rick just shook his head. He didn't swing that way.

Shit, just the thought was enough to…well, actually, the thought wasn't that bad. He could have done worse than Steve if it came to that. Actually, Rick had a feeling Steve would be considered quite a catch for a gay guy.
