Chapter 10

“WHAT PART of Germany are you from?” Ken asked suddenly. He kept his voice low so they wouldn’t be overheard.

Michel glanced at him and continued walking. It wouldn’t be long before they were close to where he’d left Kristopher and Leo. “What makes you think I’m German?” he asked. So far they’d been lucky and not met up with anyone who might recognize them. Michel had no wish to come face to face with Reiniger or any of his men. Kristopher had seen Müller at the hospital, so it was more than likely others in Reiniger’s unit who had worked at the institute might also be in the area.

“You’re not?” Ken sounded surprised. “You speak like one.”

“So does Matt,” Michel pointed out. It seemed an odd time to be having this conversation, and Ken didn’t strike him as one who wasted much time on small talk. “Why are you asking me this now?”

“I was curious, and I like to know who I’m working with.” Ken shrugged. “I know next to nothing about you.”

“You don’t need to,” Michel said. He smiled a little, imagining Kristopher’s reaction to the conversation and his amusement over Michel’s evasiveness. “I’m French,” he said finally. He had to admit he was more than a little curious about Ken too. If he ventured some information, it meant he could ask for some in return. “My aunt is German. She taught me and my brother her language so she had someone who would be able to converse with her fluently in it. Although she had been in France many years, she missed it.” She’d most likely corner Kristopher once they met and spend hours talking about home. At least he hoped so. Kristopher would enjoy it as much as she would.

“Her husband never learned?”

“He did, but he finds it very difficult. Her French is very good, so they speak that most of the time.” Michel knew his Uncle Brice had learned a few words of endearment in German. It was one of the reasons Michel told Kristopher he loved him in German. He knew how much hearing the sentiment in his native tongue meant. Just as he treasured the memory of Kristopher telling him the same thing in French.

“I’m American,” Ken said.

Michel chuckled. “I guessed. Your accent gives you away.” While Ken could get away with simple conversation if they met any soldiers before it became too obvious, Michel had already decided to step in and do most of the talking. Luckily, according to the uniforms they wore, he outranked Ken, so it wouldn’t be questioned. “You speak the language well enough, though.”

“I know my limitations,” Ken said, “and I’m following most of what you’re saying but not all of it. As long as you don’t speak too quickly I’ll be fine.” He was quiet for a few minutes before continuing. “This was supposed to be a simple mission. We were to go in, get the plans, and get out. I wasn’t expecting to be in Germany for this amount of time.
