We started to crawl on our hands and knees across the ice floe, hoping the crew wouldn’t spot us. Panuk got to his feet and jumped onto the next chunk of ice, heading back toward shore. Uki was right behind him. Penelope went next. I turned to take one last look at the Grozny before I made my leap. That was a big mistake. I lost my focus. My left foot slid off the edge of the ice and went right into the slushy water with a big splash. I felt the cold shoot right through to my toenails, and I screamed in shock at the top of lungs. I heard the captain shouting. He was looking in our direction.
