Chapter Thirteen

Wingspan had a blink or you’ll miss it feel. The small town sat just an hour out of Duchester City. The town itself had a farm store at one end and a sheriff’s station at the other. In between lay a bakery, florist, and grocery, with a couple of antique stores thrown in for that perfect small farming town feel. Forests full of trees provided the backdrop.

It looked like any farming community complete with an abandoned fruit stand in the parking lot at one end of town. The fruit stand probably did a good business during harvest season.

The smell of dragon shifters permeated the entire town, leaking into the car as they drove down Main Street.

“Will you stay after I get settled?” Teagan needed Nigel’s comfort. Nigel was the only family he had and a better parental figure than his own parents.

If he thought about that too much, his chest would ache again.

“No. Have to follow Terrance’s breadcrumbs before he kills every damn paranormal in the entire world.”

Teagan winced and sank further into his seat. He was worried about being alone for the first time in his entire life, but Nigel focused on what mattered. “Right. Will I live with the Alpha while I get settled?”

Nigel turned into the driveway of a small house. “I have a house on the west side of town. You can stay there. I’m never there anyway. You’ll pay rent and pay for the utilities.”

“That’s fine.”

“I won’t coddle you.” Nigel narrowed his eyes and shut off the engine. “I’m proud of you for finally getting out from under Terrance’s thumb and for talking your way onto the shifter council. That doesn’t make you my kid or anything.”

Teagan fought the urge to smile. Nigel might fight his paternal feelings toward Teagan, but they were still there. “Understood.”

Nigel wagged his finger at Teagan as he turned in the seat. “People in the real world, which is where you are now, pay their bills, feed themselves, and go to work on a regular basis.”

“I’m prepared to do all of that, Uncle Nigel.”

“There’s no free rides from me, young man.” Nigel kept talking because he thought Teagan would protest. He wouldn’t get an argument from Teagan about anything but the young man comment. Teagan might pretend to be in his early twenties because Terrance’s political career and public scrutiny demanded it, but he was much older. It wasn’t his fault he looked as young as he did.

“Okay. And thank you. I don’t know if I’ve said that yet.”

Nigel put his finger down and drew Teagan to him across the center console of the car. “About twelve times, not that I’m counting.”

Teagan hugged him back. “I’m just grateful. If it weren’t for you, I’d be lost.”

“I know.” Nigel let him go when the door to the house opened and the biggest dragon shifter Teagan had ever seen stood in the opening. “I can stay a couple of days. Not more than that. And you don’t have to pay rent, just fix the place up and pay utilities.
