As I turned and headed to my house, Zburătorul’s words still resounded in my ears. Was there a hidden plan behind it? Though he sounded so sincere and given the help he had gifted our family, I felt compelled to agree. Alas, I still had a family to take care of. I couldn’t let myself to even think of leaving them and going with Narcis, even if a sense of gratitude harbored in my heart.

The freedom he had to live for his pleasure, on his own time, even as an unnatural being, suddenly became appealing. Never before did I think about how my life would have been if I didn’t give that promise to my mother. The excitement of our adventure still flowed through my veins. And even though I missed it, I had to shove it somewhere deep where I would eventually forget about it. I couldn’t let my emotions rule my decisions. Life was already complicated, and I could never forgive myself if I disappointed my family. I wouldn’t dare look into my father’s eyes and tell him I wanted to leave. That was simply out of the question. Even if something inside me whispered: it wouldn’t be such a bad idea. The moment I saw the painting of me, something changed. No one ever chose me as their muse. I only recently learned what it meant. But when Narcis said I already embodied it, it sent me on a new whirlwind of emotions.

During our time together, I learned to distinguish Narcis’s lying face from his truthful one. Which meant his request today was truthful. And I wanted to believe him. The thought made me linger next to the door, still struggling to enter. But I had to be brave, swallow any chance of change, put aside everything that happened these past days, and move on with my life.

I breathed deeply, cracked the door open, and stepped inside. To my utter surprise, I was met by Teodora and Petra. “What are you doing here?” I asked.

“We came here to offer some solace and help your father and sisters,” said Petra.

“But I see you got all the help you needed,” said Teodora.

“I’m not sure what you mean,” I said.

“It looked like you befriended Zburătorul,” said Petra. “Actually, it looked more than friendship. Is there something going on that we should know?”

“What gave you that preposterous idea?” I retorted.

“By the way he looked at you. Also, why didn’t you tell us your brother got kidnapped? You know Gabriel could have helped, right?” Petra asked.

“I didn’t think about it at the time. I just wanted to bring him back. I wasn’t even sure where he went until Narcis told me.”

“So now you’re using his actual name?” Teodora looked at me inquisitively.

“His human name is Adrian,” I said.

“He has a human name?” asked Petra. “I thought he was always Narcis.”

“Many of the things I thought about him proved to be wrong,” I said.

“So he is not the king of seducers around here?” Petra inquired with a raised brow.
