Monday Evening

I hadn’t been to the DEA headquarters for an actual meeting before, so I hoped I could just show up without an appointment. A little arrogant, perhaps—okay, maybe a lot arrogant—but then I was the last phoenix asking for an audience with the local archangel. If I couldn’t get in whenever I wanted, I didn’t know anyone who could. Worst case scenario would be my ass thrown out on the street. I could handle that.

Much like Xavier had overseen all vampiric activities in the area as Miami’s previous Master Vampire, Adam reigned over all the other angels in south Florida as the archangel. Oh, and also over all the Community members as well, including the vampires. He was the resident VIP, and I wasn’t sure if higher levels of angels really existed or if the rumor was there to encourage people to behave. There might have been a grand total of two sightings of virtues (the next level up in the angelic choir) in the last few hundred centuries, but the accounts were shaky at best. Not quite trustworthy.

Since Kit knew significantly more about the Community species, I once asked her if Adam was the Adam, as in the original man who became an angel. I was slightly disappointed to learn he wasn’t; his name was just the most popular of his time thousands of years ago.

A few reapers glanced at me with raised eyebrows in the elevator on my way up, noting that the button for the tenth floor, the top floor and their boss’s level, was lit. I gave them a courteous nod and continued twiddling my thumbs behind my back.

When the door dinged and opened on its last stop, I was alone, all the reapers having come and gone. The archangel didn’t appear to get many visitors, or perhaps they knew he wasn’t here. Or maybe he expected visitors to set up appointments. I stepped into the foyer.

The room was longer and narrower than I expected, considering Adam’s office was supposed to be the only thing up here. A tan leather couch sat along the wall to my right and a few matching chairs faced each other on the left. Both seating areas were complete with glass-top coffee tables, holding an array of magazines from the last several decades. Besides the furniture, a few potted trees, and the receptionist’s desk, the room was barren.

“The Archangel is busy at the moment,” the reaper receptionist said after I requested an audience with his semi-holiness. Her dark blonde hair was pulled up into a sleek, perfectionist bun that made me think she might have been a ballerina in her previous life. The idea suited the elegant lines of her bone structure and poise. “He does have some time tomorrow afternoon.”

“I’ll wait until he’s not busy” I started to turn for the couch in the foyer.

“Honey, you could be waiting all night,” she said, raising an eyebrow over her tortoiseshell glasses.

I shrugged. “That just means I won’t be late for our meeting tomorrow.
