Three days later at the tilting-at-the-ring competition Shasi was just as nervous, dancing beneath Leva, eager to run. The day was cloudy and dry, and a crowd sat in the stands on either side of the course, which was scuffed with prints and still hazy with dust from the earlier races. Leva had beaten out twenty other contestants, and now she was set to run the middle lane in the last. In the lane next to her Rischa sat a big bay courser lent to him by Pash.
Sarid wasnât surprised. He had good horsemanship and an agile bodyââhelpful in catching rings on the point of a lance while cantering by on a horse.
âSwiveling hips, smoldering eyes. Moves like a Virnrayan courtesan,â said Vanli in the row above her. She caught a tendril of wind and yanked his hat off.
She wasnât in a good mood. Sheâd overheard her sister promise Rischa a kiss if he won.
âIâm not going to win,â he said. âLeva beats me. Every summer Iâm here she beats me.â
âItâs not right,â said Yelse teasingly, âthat a lady should outdo her lord again and again. Youâll win this year. Itâs time she learned her place.â
âGods forbid. Itâd be a very dull competition.â
âBut I know you. Youâre indulging her, letting her win. Sheâs only a maid and you like to see her happy.â
Rischa laughed. âIf she thought I was letting her win sheâd beat me with her horsewhip. Believe me, she wins by her own merit.â
âShe wins because she drives her horse so hard. The poor beast. Does no one think of the horses?â
He squeezed her arm. âIâll ride Lua so gently heâll think Iâm a voice in his head.â
Sarid pulled an ant from the balustrade and decapitated it.
